Rebecca Gayheart has shared an update on her life and that of her family, seven months following the unfortunate demise of her former husband, actor Eric Dane. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Step Up’s 2026 Annual Inspiration Awards, Gayheart expressed the challenges she and her daughters are currently facing while trying to navigate their new reality without their beloved father.

The actress revealed that her teenage daughters, Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, are coping with their loss as they return to school. “We’re hanging in there,” declared Gayheart. “I think it’s definitely a challenging season, but we’re doing our best.” The transition back to school has added another layer of complexity to their grief, but the family continues to lean on one another for support.
In her conversation, Gayheart highlighted the importance of connection during these difficult times. “I connect with friends. My children. Being under the same roof with my kids and having them next to me, safe, always makes me feel better,” she said. She emphasised the significance of surrounding oneself with loved ones and allowing feelings to be expressed openly as a means of coping.
The bond between Gayheart and Dane, who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), was complex. Although the couple had filed for divorce in 2018, Gayheart later retracted the divorce request in March 2025, demonstrating a commitment to support Dane during his illness. The couple had first met in 2003 and married the following year. Despite their separation, Gayheart stepped in as Dane’s primary caretaker, managing his healthcare team and navigating the intricate healthcare system to ensure he received the necessary treatment.
Eric Dane’s battle with ALS came to an end on February 19, 2025, at the age of 53. Just a month prior, Dane publicly shared his diagnosis, expressing gratitude for the support of his family. Although no longer living together at the time, Gayheart remained steadfast in her caregiving role during Dane’s illness, highlighting how crucial it was for the family to come together during such a trying period.
Reflecting on the experience, Gayheart explained the importance of teaching her daughters to be present for their father. In her appearance on the Broad Ideas podcast hosted by Rachel Bilson, she shared her approach to encouraging family solidarity. “He is our family. He is your father,” Gayheart conveyed to her daughters. “We show up, and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it.”
The emotional weight of loss often has no clear strategy for coping, as Gayheart candidly noted. “I don’t know if I’m doing it well or if I’m doing it in the wrong way or the right way,” she admitted. “I’m just showing up. I’m showing up and I’m trying to be there for them.”
Now, as the family seeks to establish a sense of normalcy, Gayheart is focusing on the well-being of her daughters, nurturing their education as they navigate adolescence. She remains committed to being a steadfast presence in their lives, demonstrating that family resilience plays a crucial role in the healing process.
The annual Inspiration Awards event, where Gayheart spoke, is organised to honour mentorship and the inspiring roles women and girls play in chasing their dreams. This message of support resonates deeply with Gayheart and her daughters during this pivotal time in their lives.
Through her openness and vulnerability, Gayheart stands as a testament to the enduring strength of family, even amidst profound grief. As the months unfold, she continues to prioritise connection and care, seeking solace in shared moments as they journey together in this challenging chapter.
