Oscar-winning actress Marisa Tomei has shared her straightforward and refreshing approach to wellness, which she believes prioritises simplicity over the relentless pursuit of perfection. At 61 years of age, Tomei’s philosophy includes a commitment to quality sleep, engagement with nature, and a preference for functional movement such as walking, rather than more conventional gym routines.

In a candid conversation with *PEOPLE*, Tomei expressed her emphasis on rest, stating, “I like a lot of sleep!” She underscored her love for the outdoors, explaining that she sees physical activity as a natural part of her lifestyle rather than a chore confined to gym walls. “I do exercise, but I tend to favour functional movement, like walking,” she explained, painting a picture of wellness that shuns excessive gym sessions for a more holistic approach.

This uncomplicated mindset has not only shaped her personal health but also inspired her professional ventures, particularly her co-founding of Terra Mare—a supplement company dedicated to promoting simplicity in wellness products aimed at women. Among its offerings is ‘Morning Restore’, a collagen powder enriched with essential vitamins, prebiotics, and probiotics.
Tomei emphasised the philosophy behind Terra Mare, stating, “You don’t have to really think about it.” She recognised the constant pressure women face to conform to unrealistic standards and sought to create a product that offers a straightforward, no-fuss alternative to this burden. “I wanted something simple that wasn’t going to create another cycle of chasing perfectionism,” she added.
Throughout her career, the actress has embraced the importance of building connections with others, a belief grounded in the nurturing experiences she had growing up in New York City. Reflecting on her childhood, Tomei remarked on the influence of her mother’s dedication to family meals. “I was really lucky that my mother, even though she worked, made a meal for us every day. We all sat down together, and that simple and consistent thing was built into my nervous system,” she said. The shared moments of laughter and insight around the dinner table, she believes, contribute to a sense of emotional well-being.
As she elaborated on her wellness journey, Tomei acknowledged the importance of slowing down in today’s fast-paced world. Her insights into the benefits of meaningful connections are particularly timely, as she balances her personal philosophy with a thriving career in the entertainment industry.
Tomei has recently reprised her iconic role as Aunt May in the film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and is set to appear alongside Liam Neeson in “The Mongoose,” as well as Sam Rockwell in the horror film “Hellhound.” Additionally, she has landed a lead role in the upcoming second season of the HBO series “War.”
“It’s been a busy year!” she declared, expressing her excitement at the opportunities that have emerged as the entertainment sector rebounds from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It feels nice, after an enforced fallow period, to find things that were speaking to me that I could say yes to,” she noted, suggesting that her recent projects have rekindled her passion for acting.
Tomei’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of balancing professional pursuits with personal well-being. As she navigates her career, she remains rooted in values that promote a healthier lifestyle, focusing on simplicity, natural movement, and the significance of shared human experiences. In a world that often demands relentless ambition and self-optimisation, Tomei’s philosophy stands out as a beacon of self-acceptance and wellness.
