The popular reality competition show, “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test,” returns to Fox for its fifth season on 24 September 2023. This season features an intriguing lineup of 15 celebrity recruits who will navigate a series of extreme challenges designed to push their physical and mental limits.
Set in the challenging environment of Malaysia, participants will experience what the show describes as “the world’s toughest test” in one of the most demanding settings a soldier might encounter—the jungle. The contestants will face a variety of intense tasks, including searching for crucial military weapons in a cramped underground bunker, retrieving a supply load suspended 300 feet above the jungle floor, and enduring a barrage of chemical gassing while trying to gather coordinates for an enemy vessel, among other daunting challenges.

Unlike many reality series that eliminate participants through voting, “Special Forces” operates differently. Contestants may choose to leave the competition voluntarily, although they can also be withdrawn for medical reasons or if deemed unfit by the Directing Staff (DS). This unique format sets the stage for psychological resilience as much as physical prowess.
This season boasts an impressive roster of celebrity recruits. Included in the line-up are well-known figures such as Oliver Hudson, Candace Cameron Bure, Collin Gosselin, Ruby Rose, and disgraced politician George Santos, among others. The group aims to find out just how far they can push themselves in this extreme setting.
Adding to the challenging atmosphere are the show’s Directing Staff, who include ex-special forces personnel such as Rudy Reyes, Billy Billingham, Jason “Foxy” Fox, and Jovon “Q” Quarles. These seasoned professionals not only guide the recruits through the tasks but also challenge them to confront their mental resilience under pressure.
David Charvet, a notable recruit who is returning to the public eye after two decades away from the spotlight, recently spoke about the challenges of the show. In an interview, he highlighted that while physical training was essential, it was the mental aspect that proved to be the most demanding. Charvet explained that navigating the combined pressures of daily tasks and the varied personalities within the group was particularly difficult, emphasizing the impact of mental endurance on one’s overall performance in the competition.
The fifth season of “Special Forces” will consist of eight episodes, which is one less than the previous season and two fewer than the third. Episodes will be released weekly on Thursday nights, with the first episode airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
Following the premiere on 24 September, subsequent episodes will be released on the following dates: 1 October, 8 October, 15 October, 22 October, 29 October, 5 November, and culminating with the finale on 12 November.
For viewers eager to catch the action, “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test” will be available to stream on Hulu the day after the episodes air. Additionally, earlier seasons of the show can currently be found on both Disney+ and Hulu.
As the new season approaches, anticipation builds regarding who will rise to the challenge and who may find the experience too much to bear. Will the celebrity recruits thrive under the unprecedented pressure, or will their resolve falter against the military-style trials set before them? Only time will tell as we prepare for an exhilarating return to one of television’s most intense reality competitions.
