On that fateful day, Arneson was driving northbound on the I-25 near Mead, Colorado, with her then 10-year-old son. The two were returning home from a surprise trip to a local water park, where Arneson, a devoted single mother and preschool teacher, had taken the day off to create lasting memories with her child.
As Arneson drove, Darnell Yingling, an employee of Import Auto Inc., was transporting a large excavator on a trailer. However, Yingling’s failure to properly secure the equipment would have dire consequences. According to a press release from Dulin McQuinn Young, LLP, Yingling encountered a crucial situation when attempting to pass beneath the Weld County Road 34 overpass. The excavator’s extended arm made contact with the bridge, causing a substantial cloud of dust and debris to cascade onto the northbound lanes of the interstate.
A significant piece of concrete fell onto Arneson’s vehicle, smashing through the windshield and fatally injuring her. Despite her son’s desperate attempts to call for assistance, Arneson succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the crash. Following the incident, the Colorado State Patrol launched an investigation that determined the excavator had been improperly loaded, resulting in the arm exceeding the height limitations of the bridge.
Legal action soon followed the tragedy. In November 2023, Yingling was charged with vehicular homicide, as reported by the Loveland Reporter-Herald. The following January, he entered a guilty plea to a charge of vehicular homicide-reckless driving and was subsequently sentenced to four years in community corrections alongside 300 hours of community service.
Now orphaned, Arneson’s son is under the care of his grandparents, who are coping with the untimely loss of their daughter as well as the responsibilities of raising their grandson.
