**Concerns Raised Over White House Ballroom Construction and Safety Codes**

A recent report has brought to light a contentious episode involving the renovation of the East Wing of the White House, specifically regarding the design of a new ballroom. According to sources cited by *The Washington Post*, architect James McCrery II departed from the project following disagreements with former President Donald Trump, who allegedly ignored safety concerns related to fire codes and emergency exits.

McCrery, the initial architect tasked with developing designs for the ballroom, is reported to have raised alarms about the project’s compliance with vital safety regulations. Insiders claim that Trump dismissed these concerns, asserting that White House construction was exempt from standard building codes and reportedly quipped, “I am the code.” However, a White House representative has strongly rejected this narrative, asserting that the reasons for McCrery’s departure were unrelated to code issues.

In response to the allegations, the White House emphasised that “life safety issues have been addressed and resolved continuously as the design has evolved,” suggesting that any insinuation of safety negligence is misguided. The spokesperson further insisted that although McCrery was a respected member of the design team, a decision was made to take the project in a different direction after he completed his initial designs.

Upon leaving the project in October, McCrery expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work on the ballroom’s early designs, refraining from commenting directly on the alleged safety disputes. He noted that working alongside many dedicated professionals at the Executive Mansion was a significant honour and that a new firm was engaged to take over the project.

The East Wing renovation, announced in July 2025, includes plans for a ballroom spanning 90,000 square feet, intended to be a site for prominent events. Initially estimated at around £160 million, subsequent assessments have seen the price soar to£320 million, with internal documents reportedly indicating a current projection reaching £480 million.
