Hoda Kotb has shared an innovative parenting strategy recommended by her therapist, which focuses on fostering understanding and calmness in tense situations. During a recent episode of Ina Garten’s Making Space podcast, aired on 23rd September 2023, Kotb recounted her experience as a mother and how this technique assisted her in addressing a challenging moment with her daughter, Haley Joy.

The 62-year-old television personality detailed the scenario that unfolded when her nine-year-old daughter independently rode her bike to an ice cream truck without permission. The alarming situation unfolded as the babysitter became anxious and reached out to Kotb, unsure of Haley’s whereabouts. In that moment, Kotb felt a rush of anger but decided to employ her therapist’s advice to help defuse the emotional intensity of the situation.

Her therapist had suggested an intriguing approach: “This week, everything that goes wrong is your fault,” which, at first, left Kotb feeling bewildered. However, she soon realised the usefulness of this tactic in preventing a heightened emotional response. As she returned home from her outing, she took a deep breath and reminded herself, “This was all my fault,” before stepping inside her home.
Upon entering, Kotb quickly noticed that Haley did not initiate a conversation about the incident. Instead, she calmly enforced a consequence, stating, “Okay, you’re going to go up to bed at 6:30 after dinner.” When she later spoke with her daughter, she discovered that Haley had been preoccupied with thoughts of a friend she missed and had acted impulsively in a moment of nostalgia.
Kotb reflected on the importance of understanding her daughter’s feelings while still maintaining an element of discipline. “I get it. I understand that you miss your friend and I know that’s hard. But we never ride away by ourselves again,” she conveyed. By adopting this gentler approach, Kotb believed she successfully “lowered the temperature” of the situation, allowing for more effective communication without the usual screaming or crying associated with discipline.
This experience resonated with her as a reminder that emotional reactions can impede understanding. Garten emphasised this point, noting how an aggressive response would only lead to self-defence from the child. Kotb’s story serves as an insightful reminder for parents grappling with conflict resolution, suggesting that a calmer stance can mitigate further tension and open the door for dialogue.
In addition to navigating challenges with Haley, Kotb is also a mother to her younger daughter, Hope, aged seven. With the new school year commencing, both girls have recently embarked on a new academic adventure. Kotb shared her joy on social media with photos of the family on the first day of school, exclaiming, “It’s here! First day of school. 4th and 2nd grade! Whaaaatttt?”
The heartfelt anecdotes shared by Kotb not only highlight her dedication as a mother but also underscore a fundamental parenting philosophy centred on understanding and empathy. By implementing techniques that promote cool-headedness, she aims to foster a nurturing environment where her daughters feel heard and safe while also learning invaluable lessons about responsibility.
Parents facing similar challenges may find inspiration in Kotb’s approach, which encourages reflection and understanding rather than resorting to punitive measures driven by immediate emotional responses. Her story serves as a practical reminder that in the world of parenting, patience and empathy can effectively navigate through moments of difficulty.
