A recent report suggests that Generation Z is poised to become the wealthiest generation in history by around 2035. Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is projected to accumulate approximately $36 trillion in wealth over the next five years and over $74 trillion by 2040, as per findings published by Bank of America researchers. This significant wealth transfer is expected to occur as Baby Boomers pass down assets to younger generations in the coming years, shaping global spending patterns due to Gen Z’s current spending habits on both essential and non-essential items.

The report highlights that Gen Z is likely to be one of the most disruptive generations for economies, markets, and social systems. While they are set to inherit substantial wealth, they are also facing financial challenges. On average, they spend twice as much as they save, partly due to the high costs of living. Despite holding more two-year and four-year degrees compared to previous generations at the same age, many Gen Z individuals are facing underemployment in a competitive job market.
According to the 2024 Better Money Habits survey by the bank, nearly one-third of Gen Z respondents feel they are lagging behind their parents in achieving financial goals at the same age. The report also reveals a significant increase in Gen Z-led households receiving government unemployment benefits, indicating ongoing economic challenges for this generation. Financial literacy expert Amanda Frances advises Gen Z to prepare for their evolving role in the global economy by adopting a mindset focused on wealth creation and investing early.
Frances emphasises the importance of becoming investors rather than just consumers, leveraging opportunities presented by digital fluency in areas such as fintech, e-commerce, content creation, and AI-driven businesses. She believes that Gen Z’s embrace of innovation will position them as leaders in the next economic upturn. By recognising and capitalising on these opportunities, Gen Z has the potential to achieve significant financial growth and success in the years ahead.
The study’s authors point to the unique advantages that Gen Z possesses, including access to a wide range of wealth-building opportunities that previous generations did not have. With a proactive approach towards financial planning and investment, Gen Z can overcome current economic obstacles and thrive in an ever-evolving global economy. By adopting a forward-thinking mindset and harnessing their digital capabilities, Gen Z has the potential to shape future economic trends and drive innovation across various industries.
As Gen Z prepares to take the reins as the wealthiest generation in the coming years, the need for financial education and strategic planning becomes increasingly crucial. By equipping themselves with the necessary tools and knowledge, Gen Z can navigate the complexities of wealth management and emerge as powerful contributors to the global economy. With the right mindset and approach, Gen Z has the opportunity to redefine traditional wealth accumulation and lead the way towards a prosperous future.
