Simon Cowell will not be present at the judges’ table for the season 21 finale of “America’s Got Talent” (AGT) as he continues his recovery from a recent back surgery. The well-known judge and series creator, aged 66, indefinitely stepped away from the show to focus on his health following a “routine” procedure.

The absence of Cowell, who has been part of AGT since its inception, was first confirmed in August after he underwent surgery to address ongoing back problems. Reports stated that he would be absent for several weeks to recuperate. His recovery comes after he previously dealt with significant back issues, including a serious injury sustained in 2020.
In his place, British influencer and musician KSI will join judges Howie Mandel, Sofia Vergara, and Mel B for the finale, which is set to air over two nights on September 22 and September 23. KSI, 33, has gained fame as a YouTuber and has experience in judging talent shows, having appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent” since 2025.
Cowell’s chair remained empty during the August live shows, with the judging panel consisting solely of Mandel, Vergara, and Mel B. Kenan Thompson was brought in as the first guest judge during the quarterfinals, having previously substituted for Cowell following his 2020 accident.
