Annielaurie Grace, a 33-year-old mother from Ohio, has taken to TikTok to share her experiences during her third pregnancy, shedding light on an unexpected response to her physical appearance. In a recently viral video, Grace showcased her noticeably pale pregnant belly, which sparked a mix of light-hearted and harsh reactions online.

Grace’s pregnancy has unfolded largely without incident, aside from a challenging phase of hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition that left her bedridden and required intravenous treatment until she was about 24 weeks along. Following this difficult period, she felt compelled to document her journey on social media, publishing a lighthearted clip on Independence Day.

In the video, Grace donned a blue bikini complemented by a red tank top. However, it was her paler midriff, a stark contrast to the sun-kissed skin of the rest of her body, that caught the attention of viewers. The response from the TikTok community was overwhelmingly mixed; while some viewers invoked humour with playful comments, others resorted to critical and disparaging remarks about her appearance.
“I was quite taken aback by the reaction,” Grace remarked. “I thought the comments would be mostly positive or funny, but they quickly turned nasty.” One commenter jokingly asked if Grace’s baby was a “Cullen,” a reference to the fictional vampire family from the Twilight series. Grace herself described the whole experience as bewildering, stating, “It’s my natural skin tone, so perhaps I have become desensitised to it.”
Grace has always identified as having very pale skin, explaining that she has worn one-piece swimsuits for most of her life, resulting in limited sun exposure for her belly. “I remember getting sunburned once as a teenager, and it was an awful experience,” she noted. Despite not shying away from the sun during previous pregnancies, she opted for more coverage this time around, concerned that tanning may lead to undesirable side effects.
Despite the negative comments, Grace shared that her doctors have expressed no concerns regarding her skin. She has been particularly vigilant in taking care of her health, having had a mole removed earlier in the year, which was thankfully found to be benign. “My dermatologist is happy with my care,” she quipped, highlighting the importance of regular health checks.
Grace has received encouragement from friends and family, particularly those who have reached out to check on her due to the backlash. While she appreciates the love and concern, she expressed her belief that such negativity reflects broader societal issues surrounding beauty standards. “It saddens me that people think it’s acceptable to comment in such an offensive manner,” she reflected.
Through her experiences, Grace aims to not only normalise the diverse experiences of pregnancy but also to empower others who may feel pressured to conform to unrealistic beauty ideals. “Pregnancy should be cherished for its beauty and challenges,” she asserted, “and I hope that anyone who feels inadequate because their body doesn’t match societal expectations finds solace in knowing they are not alone.”
Grace noted that the prevailing beauty standards can sometimes overshadow the emotional and physical toll of pregnancy. She remarked, “I just hope more people talk openly about these experiences. It’s important for others to know that they can embrace their journey without fear of judgement.”
In light of her experience, Grace is determined to continue sharing her story, advocating for a more accepting and understanding environment for all mothers. With the arrival of her third child on the horizon, she looks forward to celebrating this new chapter of her life, both online and offline, regardless of the opinions of others. Her message resonates: true beauty comes from within, and the journey of motherhood is unique and deserving of respect.
