Leah Stewart, a 34-year-old mother, has recently updated the public about her ongoing battle with the aftermath of a shark attack that left her with devastating injuries. The incident occurred on June 13 while she was swimming at Coogee Beach in Australia. After fighting for her life, Stewart spent ten days in a coma and underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of her arm.
In a candid video shared on social media on September 21, Stewart revealed that part of her medical treatment—a skin graft taken from her right leg to aid healing on her left—has unfortunately failed. The news has left her feeling “pretty devastated,” as she expressed in the emotional video, where she reflected on her journey since the harrowing event.
The mother of one disclosed the details of her situation stating, “This is not the post I was wanting to do, but I had my graft checked yesterday and it was confirmed that it failed.” Stewart admitted that she has been feeling emotional about her plight, mentioning that she had shed “quite a few tears” over the failed procedure.
Despite these setbacks, Stewart indicated that there is a silver lining, as she is taking a break from the vacuum-assisted closure (vac) machine that has been part of her treatment. This change has allowed her a bit more mobility, although the healing process remains challenging. In her video, she showed her followers the raw area on her leg where the graft had been placed, saying, “It’s still pretty raw, but thankfully it’s healing, and they put it on my left leg. But unfortunately, checked yesterday, it didn’t work.”

Her brother Joshua Stewart initiated a GoFundMe campaign which successfully raised approximately £400,000 to support Leah and her family during this challenging time. He noted that Leah’s first thoughts following the attack were of her one-year-old daughter, August, as she continuously asked about her wellbeing.
Despite the emotional and physical toll of her current situation, Stewart remains resolute about continuing her recovery journey. She addressed her audience with resilience, indicating, “Anyway, we keep moving forward.”
