Actress Elisa Donovan, best known for her role as Morgan Cavanaugh on the beloved sitcom ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch,’ has opened up about her experiences on the show and the challenges she faced during her career in the early 2000s. Speaking on the Still Here Hollywood Podcast with Steve Kmetko, the 55-year-old recalled moments of creative frustration that led her to contemplate stepping away from acting entirely.

Joining the cast in 2000, Donovan portrayed Morgan, one of Sabrina’s college housemates. The show gained a loyal fanbase and featured notable stars such as Melissa Joan Hart, Nate Richert, and Beth Broderick. Despite the successful ensemble, Donovan revealed that she sometimes felt creatively stifled due to the repetitive nature of the sitcom format.

Reflecting on those feelings, she stated, “I did have a few moments on Sabrina where I felt very frustrated creatively.” She described her appreciation for the cast and crew but admitted that the limitations of the show made her question her path in the industry. “It was such a great group of people, but I felt very stifled,” she explained.

The end of ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ in 2003 provided Donovan with a new opportunity to explore other roles. She anticipated that her exit from the show would lead to further success, stating, “I thought I was going to get to do another fantastically successful show.” Unfortunately, this was not the case.

She participated in numerous screen tests, auditioning for eleven different roles in one season alone. “Anyone who has been through that process knows how hard it can be, and it’s incredibly nerve-wracking,” she noted. Despite her efforts, none of the roles materialised, and she reflected on the toll that the job search took on her.

During this period of professional uncertainty, Donovan faced significant personal challenges as well. She experienced the heartbreak of a relationship ending while also dealing with her father’s cancer diagnosis. These events compounded her feelings of doubt and frustration regarding her career, leading her to question whether she wanted to continue acting. “I said, ‘Oh, what do I do? I don’t want to do this anymore,'” she recalled, describing that moment as the closest she came to resigning from the industry.

Despite these hardships, Donovan has since re-emerged in the acting world and found joy in reconnecting with her former castmates. In June, the cast of ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ gathered in Chicago for a reunion to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the show. Donovan expressed how special the event was, noting, “It’s super special because so many of us don’t get to see each other very often.”

She described the experience as “unfathomable,” indicating how surprising it is for her to see how the show has endured in popularity over the decades. Reunions like these serve not only as a celebration of their shared history but also as a testament to the lasting impact the show has had on its audience.
