A 19-year-old Wendy’s manager from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been charged with simple assault and false imprisonment after allegedly tying a co-worker to a grill, purportedly as part of a social media prank. Michiko Burton is facing these misdemeanor charges following an incident that occurred on 30th August, with details emerging during a subsequent police investigation.

The Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) reported that Burton confessed during an interview with officers on 6th September, stating that her actions were “part of a TikTok trend.” However, this claim has been disputed by another employee, who asserts the video recording of the incident was not intended for social media.

Witness Nicholus Murphy, a fellow Wendy’s employee, recorded the video in question and later provided it as evidence to the authorities. He vehemently refuted Burton’s explanation, saying, “No, it’s not true. It is my video. There was no TikTok video at all.” This discrepancy highlights concerns about the motivations behind Burton’s actions and her attempt to frame them as a harmless prank.
The alleged victim, who is neurodivergent, is reportedly suffering from the emotional fallout of the incident, according to statements made by Isaac Kimes, the attorney representing the affected individual. “This has been an awful traumatic event,” Kimes stated to local news. He noted that the exposure from the video, which has been viewed by millions, has had a significantly negative impact on the young man’s well-being.
Officials from Wendy’s released a statement emphasizing their commitment to employee safety. “The safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority,” the spokesperson stated, condemning the behaviour displayed during this incident as contrary to the company’s values. They further confirmed that an investigation was promptly initiated following the report and appropriate measures were taken.
Michiko Burton was arrested and subsequently booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $2,000 bond, which she has since posted. She is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on 22nd October for her next court date.
In light of the allegations, the incident has been referred to Adult Protective Services, and further inquiries are being conducted by the MPD’s Special Victims Unit. The case has raised questions about workplace safety, particularly for vulnerable employees.
As the investigation continues, the actions taken by both the management at Wendy’s and the legal system will be closely scrutinised, highlighting the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for all employees. The local community has expressed outrage over the event, which underscores the need for increased awareness and protective measures for those who may be more susceptible to exploitation or harm in workplace settings.
This troubling incident serves as a stark reminder that what might be perceived as harmless fun can have far-reaching consequences, particularly when it involves individuals with special needs. The case continues to unfold, and the implications for both Burton and her employer remain to be seen.
