On September 16, a 7-year-old girl, Lucy Allison Mike, her grandmother, Elsie, and a family friend, Dora Franklin, were swept away by floodwaters while returning from a shopping trip for Lucy’s upcoming birthday celebration.
According to family members, the tragedy unfolded as Lucy, Elsie, and Franklin were driving home from acquiring supplies for the girl’s birthday party when their truck became stuck in mud during a torrential downpour near Newcomb. In an attempt to seek help, Lucy’s mother, Kalisi Begay, decided to walk home, leaving her daughter and mother with the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the situation took a dire turn.
As they attempted to cross a flooded area, Elsie, Lucy, and Franklin were tragically swept away by the fast-moving waters. The Navajo Police Department received a call around 12:30 a.m. the following day regarding a possible drowning incident. Local authorities quickly mobilised several agencies to conduct a search and rescue operation in the flood zone.
The search teams sadly later discovered the bodies of the three victims. News of the tragedy spread rapidly, with family members recalling Lucy as a “big blessing” to her loved ones. This devastating incident has left the community in shock, as they grapple with the emotional aftermath.
In light of the ongoing flooding across the Navajo Nation, local authorities continue to urge residents to exercise caution. Just days following the incident, three families had to be evacuated from their homes near the San Juan River, though they were able to return shortly after.
