After coming out as a lesbian at the age of 32, she has transitioned from married life to an arrangement that includes her ex-husband, their children, and her fiancée, Maddy Gross. Fruits initially married Christopher Harrington and raised two children together. However, it was during their marriage that she began to question her attraction to men, a feeling she had buried for years. They transformed an office space into a bedroom for Harrington, allowing them to co-parent under one roof. Fruits shared, “Honestly, the transition from spouses to best friends wasn’t much of a transition at all. We were just finally naming what it already was.”
Although not without its challenges, this living arrangement offered Fruits and Harrington the opportunity to maintain their familial bond. They approached their new lifestyle with open lines of communication, ensuring that both their emotional needs were met and that they could effectively co-parent. “What makes it work is communication — not surface-level, but real, ‘Here’s how this makes me feel’ communication,” Fruits emphasised.
From a practical standpoint, the arrangement allowed the family to pool resources, making it easier to provide for their children. “Splitting into two households means two mortgages, two grocery bills,” Fruits explained. By continuing to share a home, they could redirect those funds towards enriching their children’s lives.
Just four months after coming out, Fruits met Gross, and their relationship blossomed in ways she had never experienced before. “Meeting her felt like coming home,” Fruits described, noting the intuitive, magnetic connection they shared. For her, the relationship confirmed long-held beliefs about her identity and desires. They quickly realised they were meant to be together and started discussing a future.
As their relationship deepened, Gross expressed an interest in starting a family. After conversations with Harrington, he agreed to become the biological father of a child they would raise together, wishing to maintain a strong connection with his children. In May 2023, they welcomed their son, Arlo, into the world, solidifying their unique family unit. “Arlo was so easy to love, easy to welcome in,” Fruits shared, highlighting the joy he brought to their lives.
Managing a household consisting of three adults and three children requires meticulous planning. Fruits explained they rely on a shared family calendar and weekly planning sessions to coordinate their schedules. “When you’re not honest about where your time is going, you’re quietly taking away from your ability to show up for the family,” she stated.
As their family continues to evolve, Fruits appreciates the unique nature of their arrangement. “It’s unique, it’s nontraditional, and it throws people for a loop — but it works, and we have real support built into our daily lives,” she expressed. Her relationship with Gross deepened, leading to their engagement in August 2025. They have chosen to take their time planning the wedding, wanting their children to be old enough to understand and participate in the ceremony.
Harrington remains an active participant in their family life while pursuing his own relationships. He values the stability that their shared home provides, which allows for a nurturing environment for the children. Fruits notes that while outsiders might not fully grasp their arrangement, she has learnt to embrace her true self and the unique family she has helped build.
