An eleven-year-old girl from Atlanta has tragically passed away following a basketball practice session at her school. Emanuela Datsa, a sixth-grader at Peachtree Middle School in Dunwoody, collapsed on Wednesday, September 9, and was taken to the hospital, where she died shortly after.

According to her father, Selom Datsa, Emanuela had mentioned feeling “funny” prior to her collapse but did not complain of any pain. The practice that day was said to be relatively light, with the focus primarily on shooting three-point shots. Selom expressed his disbelief, stating that his daughter had no known underlying health issues that could have contributed to this tragic incident.
Emanuela’s passing has left her family and the community in shock. An autopsy has been performed; however, the results were inconclusive. The Datsa family is now waiting for further tests in hopes of uncovering the cause of this unexpected event. The widespread impact of her death has drawn attention to the importance of youth health and safety during sports activities.
Her father described Emanuela as a passionate individual who loved basketball, music, and dancing. He fondly remembered her “loving” personality, noting that she had a unique ability to offer unconditional support to those around her, regardless of whether she knew them personally. “She loves unconditionally,” he recollected, emphasising her kind spirit.
Emanuela was the middle child, with two older sisters and a younger brother who is just nine years old. In the wake of her death, her sister Mirabel Datsa has set up a verified GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of her funeral. In a heartfelt message accompanying the fundraiser, Mirabel expressed the profound grief their family is experiencing. She stated, “This has shaken every part of our home. My mom is devastated, and any mention of my sister’s name leaves her in tears for hours. My father is trying to stay calm on the outside, but I can tell he is losing his mind with grief.”
In response to this heartbreaking situation, the DeKalb County School District has announced that grief counsellors will be made available for both students and staff at Peachtree Middle School. A spokesperson for the district extended their sympathies, saying, “Our hearts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”
Additionally, a Facebook page dedicated to the Chestnut Elementary School community, from which Emanuela had previously graduated, also shared their sorrow. In a statement, the community expressed that they were ‘heartbroken’ over the loss of their former student, affirming their solidarity with the Datsa family during this painful episode.
The sudden loss of such a young and vibrant life has understandably left a void not only within her family but throughout the community. Many people who knew Emanuela have come together to pay tribute, sharing memories that celebrate her spirit and the joy she brought to those around her.
