A San Francisco man has received a sentence of 150 years to life in prison after being convicted of a series of rapes targeting vulnerable women. Orlando Vilchez Lazo, 44, was found guilty of posing as a rideshare driver, luring his victims away from bars and nightclubs, and then assaulting them in secluded locations.

On September 14, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office announced Lazo’s sentencing, which includes six consecutive life terms. This decision follows a jury’s verdict earlier in the year, where he was convicted on 12 felony counts including rape by force, kidnapping with the intent to commit rape, and sexual penetration with a foreign object. The crimes spanned several years, with the earliest known incident occurring in 2013.

Prosecutors detailed Lazo’s modus operandi, explaining how he would approach women leaving nightlife establishments, falsely identifying himself as a rideshare driver to pick them up. He would then transport them to isolated areas where he would perpetrate his assaults. This alarming pattern of behaviour led law enforcement to label him as the “rideshare rapist” after his arrest in 2018.
The case initially went cold until DNA evidence linked him to a rape that took place in February 2018. This incident involved a 22-year-old woman who believed she was getting a ride home from a legitimate driver. Following this, two more assaults were reported in subsequent months, intensifying police efforts to find Lazo. His arrest came after a final victim bravely escaped and reported the attack, which ultimately led to his capture.
At the time of the incidents, Lazo was working as a Lyft driver, although it was revealed he had fraudulently obtained his position. Though he had passed the company’s background check, Lazo was in the United States without legal immigration status. Lyft subsequently deactivated his account upon learning of his criminal activities, stating that he had misrepresented himself during the application process.
Assistant District Attorney Michelle Brass praised the bravery of the victims, stating, “These women were remarkable in calling upon a level of bravery that no person should ever have to experience.” She expressed hope that the lengthy sentence would provide them with a sense of closure and peace after the harrowing ordeal they had endured.
The conviction and sentencing highlight the ongoing issue of violence against women in social contexts, particularly in nightlife environments where individuals may be more vulnerable. Advocacy groups have underscored the importance of creating safer spaces and encouraging reporting of such crimes, as well as providing support for victims who come forward.
As this case comes to a close, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers in seemingly routine activities such as ordering a rideshare vehicle. Authorities continue to urge individuals to stay aware and cautious when using transportation services, particularly late at night.

The community continues to grapple with the implications of Lazo’s actions, reflecting on the need for greater awareness and preventative measures to ensure the safety of all citizens in social settings.
