Jade Thirlwall, the former member of the renowned British girl group Little Mix, has recently opened up about living with a unique medical condition that has affected her throughout her life. In a candid exchange on TikTok, Thirlwall revealed that she suffers from retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction, a rare ailment colloquially referred to as “no burp syndrome.” This condition renders individuals unable to burp or belch, resulting in various ongoing complications that Thirlwall has learned to navigate.

The cricopharyngeus muscle, located at the top of the oesophagus, is responsible for relaxing to allow air to escape. When this muscle fails to function as intended, it leads to a build-up of air in the digestive system, causing significant discomfort and bloating. Thirlwall expressed her frustration regarding how this condition has impacted her daily life, particularly while performing on stage, noting, “It’s caused issues my whole life, and I’m so sick of people commenting on my body onstage when I’m just bloated af.”

In her TikTok comments, the singer shared her relatable experience, echoing sentiments from a video by content creator Gemma Renwick on the same condition. Thirlwall wrote, “Omg I finally feel so seen and understood,” indicating her relief in finding a community that understands her struggles. While she finds some solace in raising awareness about R-CPD, the unwanted remarks about her body have taken a toll on her mental well-being.

Thirlwall previously addressed issues surrounding her body image, including her battles with an eating disorder during the early stages of her career. She has been open about the challenges of maintaining a healthy perspective in an industry often obsessed with appearances. In a conversation with The Guardian, she commented on her constant deliberation over potential weight-loss medications, stating, “I have a daily battle with myself not to go on Ozempic… I don’t judge people that do, but because I have a history of eating disorders, I don’t know where taking something like that would end for me.”
As she grapples with the implications of her medical condition, Thirlwall is also contemplating possible treatments. One suggested option is the use of botulinum toxin, or ‘throatox’, which involves an injection into the throat area to help alleviate symptoms associated with R-CPD. According to Yale Medicine, this treatment is considered the primary approach for managing the condition, with many patients experiencing significant relief and the ability to burp after a single injection.
Despite the potential benefits of treatment, Thirlwall has reservations, primarily due to concerns about how it might impact her singing career. Given that she has been touring extensively in support of her debut solo album, “That’s Showbiz, Baby!”, her performances and vocal health remain paramount. She expressed apprehension, stating, “I’d like to undergo the treatment but worry it’ll affect my vocals.”
The pop star has been busy with her tour schedule, which continues into the latter part of 2026, including three shows in Europe. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Thirlwall shared insights into her artistic evolution. She indicated that while her debut album reflected her experiences within the entertainment industry and her complicated relationship with fame, her future works promise to explore new themes and styles.
Thirlwall said, “I’m very excited to start a new JADE world,” hinting at her desire to evolve artistically while remaining authentic to her roots. She remarked on the fundamental nature of her music, emphasising the importance of individuality in her creative process. She hopes her next album will resonate as strongly as her initial work while capturing her growth as an artist.
As Thirlwall navigates the complexities of her condition and her career, her openness about her health issues is an encouraging step towards normalising conversations around such ailments. The singer’s journey is not just a personal narrative of triumph over adversity; it also serves to raise awareness about under-discussed medical conditions that impact people’s lives in ways that are often overlooked. As she marches forward in both her health and music endeavours, fans will undoubtedly rally behind her, celebrating both her authenticity and resilience.
