In 2003, after learning that 15-year-old Paola Yarberry was living alone in Douglas, Doris opened her home to the teenager. On that fateful day in September 2006, Doris was cleaning the park with Yarberry when tragedy struck. Jon had briefly left to run an errand, and when he returned, he found Doris deceased, having suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.
