The trouble began around 8 p.m. when police received multiple calls regarding a disturbance at an apartment complex located in the 500 block of Northeast 23rd Circle. Chief Balken elaborated that the confrontation involved a group of juveniles, aged between ten and sixteen, alongside several adults. “This incident was taking place outdoors in the parking lot of that housing complex,” Balken explained, indicating that tensions had escalated before police intervened.
Officers managed to restore order after roughly 40 minutes on the scene. However, the situation took a more sinister turn when, about an hour later, the family, who had been present during the initial altercation, began their journey home from a nearby complex.

According to Balken, the victims were likely followed from the complex. “Once they made it to Southeast 11th Avenue, the car that was pursuing them opened fire, striking their vehicle multiple times,” he said. Tragically, the mother sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound to her hand, while the young child was hit in the chest.
Initial reports indicated that the child’s condition was critical, but Balken reassured the public that both the child and the mother are anticipated to recover from their injuries. “The child was touch and go for a little bit there, but is expected to pull through and survive this,” he added.
The father of the child was fortunately uninjured during the attack. Following the shooting, the family chose to transport themselves to a local hospital to seek medical attention. Chief Balken expressed relief that the situation was contained, stating, “Thankfully, everyone in that case is expected at this time to survive.” He described the incident as isolated and indicated no immediate danger to the broader community.
Authorities are now actively seeking assistance from the public to gather information that could lead to the identification of the shooters. Chief Balken urged anyone with relevant information or video footage—particularly from doorbell or home security cameras—to come forward by contacting the Ocala Police Department. The department’s phone number for tips is 352-369-7000.
The local community has expressed shock over the incident, given its unpredictable nature and the violent turn of events. Many residents have rallied in support of the victims, conveying their wishes for a swift recovery.
As the investigation continues, police have assured the public that they are doing everything possible to bring those responsible for this shocking act of violence to justice. It serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of urban life and the importance of community vigilance in safeguarding against such incidents.
