A family in Srinagar, located in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, encountered an extraordinary incident during their morning tea when a snake unexpectedly plummeted from the sky. The occurrence left the family startled as they enjoyed their mid-morning respite on the veranda.

Wildlife SOS, a conservation organisation dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, recounted the remarkable event. The family’s peaceful tea time at around 11 a.m. took an unusual turn when a black kite, a predatory bird common in the region, swooped down while clutching a live rat snake in its talons. In a startling twist of fate, the bird accidentally released its cargo directly into the family’s garden, bringing an abrupt end to their leisurely gathering.

Upon receiving a call from the distressed family, Wildlife SOS mobilised its rescue team to address the situation. The representatives noted that the snake, which had survived both the fall and its previous encounter with the bird, was discovered hiding near a kitchen window. This non-venomous rat snake posed no significant threat to the household, aside from disrupting their tea time.
Wildlife SOS rescuers delicately worked to safely coax the snake away from the home. After assessing the creature’s health and confirming that it was indeed a non-venomous species, the team placed the snake in a secure box for safe relocation. Photographs taken during the rescue captured Wildlife SOS personnel proudly handling the large snake prior to its removal from the property.
This incident is just one example of unusual snake encounters reported recently. In a separate event on 10 August, a six-year-old boy named Kenzie Macrae experienced a frightening confrontation with a snake while visiting a park in Scotland. Initially mistaking the creature for a legless lizard native to Europe, Kenzie began to pet the animal, only to be bitten shortly thereafter. It was later identified as a venomous adder.
Following the bite, Kenzie required two doses of anti-venom and an extended hospital stay to facilitate his recovery. Fortunately, the young boy has since made a full recovery, though the encounter was undoubtedly alarming for him and his family.
Wildlife experts emphasise the importance of exercising caution around snakes, particularly when they are unknown species. Many snakes are harmless, yet several types, like the adder, can pose serious risks. Events like these highlight the unpredictable nature of wildlife interactions in both urban and rural settings.
As the search for the non-venomous rat snake draws attention to the wild animals that inhabit various landscapes, Wildlife SOS continues to emphasise the need for humane wildlife management strategies. The organisation works towards educating the public on how to coexist with local wildlife responsibly.
While the startled family may have been shaken by their unexpected visitor, they can find solace in the fact that the wildlife rescue team was able to safely relocate the rat snake away from their home. This incident reminds us all of the occasional surprises nature can bring, particularly in areas where human habitation overlaps with wildlife habitats.
