A New Hampshire distillery is pushing the boundaries of unconventional beverages with the introduction of Deerslayer whiskey, a bold creation infused with the essence of hunting. Tamworth Distilling has crafted this unique whiskey by incorporating hand-chopped red deer meat sourced from a nearby farm, along with an array of woodsy ingredients designed to evoke the atmosphere of the New England wilderness.

The Deerslayer whiskey stands out not only for its distinct flavour profile but also for its meticulous production process. The distillers at Tamworth combine venison with ingredients such as cranberries and porcini mushrooms. Following this, the mixture is allowed to ferment overnight, a step intended to accentuate the gaminess of the meat. To complete the process, the whiskey is slow-smoked over branches sourced from boreal forests, further enhancing its earthy characteristics.

Matt Power, the distiller and biochemist at Tamworth Distilling, elaborated on the whiskey’s unique composition. He stated that ingredients such as juniper, green peppercorn, and cranberry play a crucial role in crafting the woodsy and autumnal qualities that surround the venison. Power is driven by a visionary goal for Deerslayer to encapsulate the flavours of New England’s fall landscape, transforming it into an experience beyond just the taste of venison.
The launch of Deerslayer coincides perfectly with the opening of New Hampshire’s hunting season, providing enthusiasts with an intriguing new option. The whiskey will be available in two bottle sizes: a 500ml ‘buck’-sized bottle, priced at £35, and a smaller 200ml ‘Bambi’ bottle, retailing at £28. Both are set to become available on September 15.
Originally conceived as a limited edition release, Deerslayer has earned its place among Tamworth Distilling’s main offerings. Founder Steven Grasse noted that the whiskey has become a defining example for the distillery, reflecting its aspirations to innovate and challenge conventions within the spirits industry.
Deerslayer is not the only unusual beverage on offer at Tamworth Distilling. The distillery has also introduced Skeeter’s nootkatone-flavoured whiskey, which is derived from a natural bug repellent. This choice of flavour reflects the distillery’s commitment to crafting “weird whiskies” that push the limits of traditional tastes.
With an alcohol by volume of 49.5% (99 proof), Deerslayer promises a robust experience for those keen to explore its distinctive flavour. Consumers can purchase this intriguing whiskey directly from the distillery’s website, select retail stores, or by visiting Tamworth Distilling in person.
As curiosity grows around the Deerslayer whiskey, it is clear that Tamworth Distilling is not shying away from experimentation. By merging culinary elements with spirits, the distillery has tapped into a niche market that may appeal to both hunting aficionados and adventurous drinkers alike. As the hunting season unfolds, the unique character of Deerslayer is likely to spark conversations and perhaps even inspire new trends within the spirits landscape.
