Mahershala Ali has made a striking appearance at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where he showcased his latest project, the high-octane thriller *Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother*. The film premiered on 12 September and signals a significant pivot in Ali’s celebrated career, prompting the actor to declare that he is entering his “action era.”

In a relaxed atmosphere at the PEOPLE, Entertainment Weekly, and Shutterstock Portrait Studio, the Oscar-winning star reflected on his role as Latif, a contract killer with a complex personal life. Ali, widely recognised for his dramatic performances in films such as *Moonlight* and *Green Book*, expressed excitement about stepping into the action genre. “This is definitely the beginning of my action era,” he told PEOPLE, adding a humorous note about his past roles: “I always die when the action starts.”

Unlike previous films where he often met an untimely end during intense sequences, *Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother* allows Ali to fully engage with the action, providing a fresh challenge that he previously lacked in his films. “This time I actually got to do the action,” he remarked. The film, directed by Bassam Tariq, also features notable performances from John Cho and Laith Nakli, enhancing the project’s intrigue.

However, his wish to retire is complicated by the insistent demands of his employer, Mike, and escalating tensions with the character played by Cho.

Ali further described the appeal of this new role, connecting it to his childhood dreams of becoming action heroes. He expressed, “Part of what made me eager to take on this project was an inner desire to service that little kid in me. You know, the kid who would watch a movie and then pretend to be Batman.” His enthusiasm for exploring the dynamics of action choreography appealed to him: “Getting to immerse in the choreography and work with the stunt team was a joy for me.”

The actor acknowledged the steep learning curve associated with action roles while contrasting them with the emotional depth required in dramatic acting. “While we all strive for authenticity in drama, tackling the physical demands of an action role brought about new responsibilities that felt like a dream,” he shared. Ali also lauded the creators, particularly the stunt coordinator Adam Hart, for their contributions in making the experience rewarding.

Interestingly, Ali’s assertion of embarking on an “action era” follows the disappointing news that his anticipated role in a *Blade* reboot is no longer unfolding. The project, which was initially revealed by Marvel Studios in 2019, was set to reimagine the action-horror film that starred Wesley Snipes. Although he had hoped to collaborate with Tariq on this venture, Ali shared with GQ in July that it simply did not materialise as planned: “For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on.”
