In a recent conversation with PEOPLE, Pollari shared insights into the creative process behind “The Low Gives Weight.” Notably, he incorporated elements of Polari, a historical British cant developed by gay men during a time when homosexuality was criminalised in the UK. Pollari discovered this fascinating language during the pandemic and became involved with a Polari-speaking group, which he found invaluable for his songwriting.

“I had always wanted to create a song like this,” Pollari remarked. “David Bowie had incorporated words from Polari in some of his songs, and I thought it was my turn to give it a go.” By weaving Polari into his lyrics, Pollari not only pays homage to the language’s rich history but also connects it to his own narrative of coming out and self-expression.

Over the years, Pollari has consciously chosen projects that reflect a theme of transitioning from private to public life. With “The Low Gives Weight,” he aims to explore the ties between the struggle inherent in Polari’s history and his personal experiences. He elaborated, “These themes resonate with anyone grappling with personal challenges that may stem from home, grief, and hidden emotions. Pollari recounted the toll the long hours of dancing took on him, admitting that he left the shoot with his feet feeling “completely bruised and cramped” from performing in dress shoes. “I’ve always dreamed of creating a dancing video reminiscent of the great works,” he shared. “I love ‘All That Jazz’ and the performances by Liza Minnelli in both ‘Cabaret’ and ‘Sweet Charity.’ I wanted to bring that energy into my own work.”
