Participants in a recent half marathon in Paramus, New Jersey have raised serious concerns about the event’s safety after severe rainfall led to flooding on the course. Among those who experienced the challenging conditions was Zac Clark, a former contestant from the reality television show “The Bachelorette,” who managed to secure a commendable third place in his age category.

The race, aptly named the Racefaster Half Marathon, took place on a rainy Sunday, 13th September. Runners faced precarious conditions, battling through water that, at times, reached up to their waists. In a post shared on social media, Clark described one particularly alarming section of the race, which featured strong currents that made navigation treacherous. In his Instagram update, Clark reported finishing the race with a chip time of 1:40:42, proudly acknowledging the difficulties faced along the way. “Bro, this is nuts,” he declared, referring to the chaotic circumstances competitors encountered. His post demonstrated the camaraderie among runners, highlighting various participants holding onto railings for support as the floodwaters surged around them.

Heavy rainfall had swept across the region, prompting numerous flash-flood warnings for states across the East Coast, including New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. The extreme weather likely posed severe risks to runners, prompting many to question the decision to continue with the race as scheduled.

Marijana Dinic, one of the participants, reflected on her experience, expressing disbelief at the race’s continuation. She recounted how she and another runner had to rely on each other for support in the flooded areas, gesturing to indicate the height of the water. “It should have been cancelled. It was not organised properly, I feel,” she stated, sharing her concerns about the race management.

Another runner, Megan Chesney, made the decision to withdraw from the event for safety reasons. “I had told my friend that the moment we saw the river reach the path, I would make the safety call for myself,” she explained. Cases like Chesney’s raise essential questions about participant safety and organisers’ responsibilities in adverse weather conditions.

As of yet, the race organisers have not responded to inquiries seeking clarification or comments regarding the event’s decision-making processes. This lack of communication has added to the frustration among participants who believe their safety was compromised.
