A seven-year-old girl has made a remarkable escape from a horrific situation of abuse at the hands of her uncle and his girlfriend in California. The child, who arrived at a neighbour’s house with clear signs of trauma—bruises, scars, and burn marks—pleaded for assistance, revealing the torment she had endured for an extended period.

The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office has detailed chilling accounts from the young victim. She reported that her uncle, Devin Hughes, 39, and his partner, Kayla Reynolds, 32, subjected her to severe mistreatment, particularly highlighting instances where they cut her hair with a pocketknife, burned her with vape pens, and deprived her of food while forcing her to consume dirty toilet water.
On 11th September, Hughes and Reynolds were each sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple felony charges, including torture, child abuse, and mayhem. These acts of cruelty were so extensive that the couple faced 15 charges related to the abuse.
The girl’s escape occurred in July 2025 when she fled from their mobile home. Upon reaching a neighbour’s residence, she bravely disclosed her plight and expressed a desperate desire to live with them to escape the violence. The neighbour promptly alerted authorities, who arrived and took her story seriously.
During interviews with deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, the child relayed further appalling details of her treatment. She mentioned being forced to hold in her urine to the point of accidents, after which she was reportedly made to clean it up using her own tongue. Disturbingly, she claimed that she spent much of her time confined, chained to a treadmill, and was made to sleep on the floor. The physical abuse included being restrained with zip ties and being tripped by her uncle, resulting in her black eye.
When law enforcement officials searched the couple’s residence, they uncovered harrowing living conditions that corroborated the girl’s testimony. The presence of zip ties, vapes, and other evidence supported the accounts of abuse provided by the victim. Furthermore, the deputies observed that the child appeared to be significantly malnourished, a concern that has since seen an improvement as she gained five pounds post-rescue.
San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan expressed outrage at the severity of the abuses the child suffered, labelling the situation as “abhorrent and heartbreaking.” She also noted that the young girl is now living with another family member, where she finally has the opportunity to thrive in a loving environment, free from the oppressive abuse she previously endured.
