Katherine LaNasa, the 59-year-old actress best known for her role in the HBO Max medical drama *The Pitt*, has opened up about her personal battle with breast cancer and how it has shaped both her life and her career. In an interview with *PEOPLE*, LaNasa described landing the role of compassionate nurse Dana Evans as a “deeply spiritual” experience, heavily influenced by her journey as a cancer survivor.

LaNasa’s health struggles began when she felt well in early 2023, only to be stunned by the results of a routine mammogram that revealed she had stage 1 breast cancer. Reflecting on the initial shock, LaNasa credited her proactive approach to health for saving her life. “Honestly, I wasn’t keen on visiting the doctor,” she stated. “However, after discovering that I had dense breasts in my 30s, I understood my risk factors, which motivated me to follow up with annual screenings.”
The National Cancer Institute highlights that dense breast tissue can make it more difficult for mammograms to identify cancer. Thankfully, due to her continuous monitoring, LaNasa was able to catch the disease at a manageable stage. “This early detection was fortunate,” she recalled, expressing gratitude for not having to face more severe consequences.

This personal experience catalysed her collaboration with Novartis’ “Your Attention, Please” campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness about breast cancer risks while encouraging women to prioritise regular screenings. “I know that it can be terrifying to seek help,” LaNasa said, acknowledging the fear many women face. “However, when one understands that early detection can lead to a 99% survival rate, it underscores the crucial messaging we are trying to convey.”
After her diagnosis, LaNasa underwent a surgical procedure and three weeks of radiation therapy. Remarkably, just as she was recovering from treatment, she found herself stepping back into a hospital environment, this time portraying a nurse on *The Pitt*. “Entering that set, which was so immersive, felt overwhelming,” she shared. Only six months post-treatment, the experience was raw and poignant for her. “It became apparent how real the connection was for me,” she said.

LaNasa’s own journey profoundly influenced her portrayal of Dana Evans. She reflected on her experiences as a patient, recognising how imperative it was for the healthcare professionals to offer kindness and compassion. “During my treatments, I became acutely aware of the fears inherent in being a patient,” she noted. “It has enabled me to create a character who embodies what a patient truly needs.”
Her dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2025, LaNasa received her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal in *The Pitt*. As she geared up for the 2026 Emmy Awards, where she has garnered a second nomination, she found herself reflecting on her tumultuous yet rewarding journey. “You never know what life will throw at you,” she remarked, visibly emotional about her experiences. “The tough times don’t last forever, and life can unexpectedly become beautiful.”
LaNasa’s gratitude echoes throughout her narrative. “It’s been incredibly beautiful and meaningful to receive recognition after having faced such challenges. It feels like I have been met with more good fortune than I ever anticipated. Every moment has been worthwhile,” she stated, encapsulating her sentiments regarding both her acting career and her personal health journey.
LaNasa hopes her story can encourage other women to take charge of their health and seek regular medical attention. With her platform in the media, she aims to highlight the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer, underscoring the real-life implications of her role on *The Pitt*. Her journey serves not only as an inspiring tale of resilience but as a reminder that long-term health often hinges on the proactive choices we make today.
