**Police Arrest Suspect in 2001 Fatal Shooting Linked to Cold Case Breakthrough**

After nearly 25 years of investigation, police in Charlotte, North Carolina have made a significant breakthrough in a cold case concerning the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Cesar Gudino Gonzalez during a robbery. Alan Marquis Phifer, aged 43, has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
The tragic incident occurred early in the morning on March 24, 2001, when two men broke into an apartment located in the 3700 block of North Sharon Amity Road. During the robbery, Gonzalez attempted to fend off the assailants and was shot in the head. Two other occupants of the apartment also sustained gunshot wounds but survived their injuries.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Cold Case Unit reopened the investigation earlier this year. Detectives received a lab report that included vital information linking Phifer to the crime. Forensic evidence indicated that four fingerprints belonging to Phifer were discovered at the crime scene and inside a van associated with the attack. This included a fingerprint found on a CD case located within the stolen vehicle, which was deserted near the scene.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, witnesses reported seeing the suspects fleeing the scene in a van. The vehicle was found abandoned a few hours later, having been stolen the day before the incident. Despite these leads, the investigation stalled over the ensuing years, with detectives struggling to identify Gonzalez’s killer.
It was not until late January 2026 that the Cold Case Unit decided to revisit the file, leading to the newfound evidence against Phifer. Following the analysis of the fingerprints, arrest warrants were issued, and Phifer was apprehended on August 31, 2026, by CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team. He is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County jail without bond.
The cold case had remained dormant for decades, leaving friends and family of the victim longing for justice. The recent developments have provided some closure, though the journey towards achieving justice has spanned over two decades.
