A 31-year-old woman from Oakland, California, is currently undergoing a significant recovery journey following a traumatic brain injury sustained in an accident involving two young boys. Kiara Bowling was struck by a vehicle driven by the brothers, aged just 4 and 7, while walking her friend’s dog on the morning of August 6th.

Bowling’s aunt, Karon Markham, shared with PEOPLE that her niece has no memory of the event itself but is dedicated to relearning essential skills, including walking. According to Markham, investigators informed the family that the two boys had taken their parents’ car keys while they were asleep, which led to the unfortunate incident.

The Oakland Police Department confirmed that the vehicle was involved in a sideswipe collision with another car before veering off course and hitting Bowling, who was in a crosswalk with the dog. While the boys were treated for minor injuries and have since been listed in stable condition, Bowling’s condition is considerably more serious. She has been battling critical injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured face, and lasting memory loss.
Despite her challenges, Bowling is showing signs of progress. Markham noted that her niece recently managed to take her first steps since the accident and has regained the ability to eat solid foods and swallow. She is also participating in activities such as working on puzzles and colouring, demonstrating her determination to regain independence.
However, Bowling’s recovery is fraught with uncertainty. Medical professionals are still evaluating the extent of her injuries, including when her memories might resurface. Markham revealed that Bowling often inquires about her mother and brother, both of whom passed away in recent years. Out of concern for her emotional well-being and to aid her recovery, Markham and other family members have chosen not to inform her of their deaths at this time.
Bowling is aware of the accident itself but confusion persists regarding the details. Markham recounted a conversation where Bowling spoke about “two children stealing her car” before ultimately clarifying that the boys had taken their parents’ vehicle without their knowledge. This puzzlement reflects the significant cognitive impact of her injuries.
While the Oakland police are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident, Markham expressed frustration over the lack of communication regarding how the young boys managed to escape their home unnoticed and operate the vehicle. Investigators reportedly mentioned the intention to retrieve the car’s black box data to help piece together the events of that day.
Prior to the accident, Kiara Bowling was a promising individual with ambitions in law. A former foster child, she was an advocate for children and had been actively collecting school supplies to assist underprivileged youth as the new school year approached. Recently crowned Miss California Regency International 2026, she was set to complete her final semester at California State University, East Bay, in December, with aspirations to pursue a legal career thereafter.
In light of her situation, Markham has established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with Bowling’s mounting medical expenses and the long road to recovery ahead. It serves as a testament to the community’s support and the dedication of her family during these challenging times.
As Bowling continues to recuperate, both she and her family are striving to maintain hope and faith in her potential recovery, even as they navigate the complexities of her injuries and the circumstances of the accident. The future remains uncertain, yet the strength exhibited by Bowling and her loved ones highlights the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
