Steve Pikiell, the head basketball coach for the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights, has announced that he will step back from his day-to-day responsibilities as he begins treatment for a cancer diagnosis. In an open letter released on September 9, 2023, Pikiell revealed his health struggles and expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from an extensive medical team.

The 58-year-old coach detailed his recent health challenges, noting that he had been feeling unwell for a couple of months before seeking medical advice. Following a series of tests at RWJBarnabas Health, he received the sobering news from his doctors. “I am incredibly grateful to my team of doctors at RWJBarnabas Health and Memorial Sloan Kettering for guiding and supporting us through this difficult time,” he stated. Pikiell also mentioned that he had undergone successful surgery and that his medical team has devised an effective treatment plan involving chemotherapy.
While Pikiell will maintain involvement with the Scarlet Knights, he made it clear that Assistant Head Coach Brandin Knight will take over his coaching duties during this season. Pikiell expressed confidence in Knight and the rest of the coaching staff, stating, “I know they will do an amazing job leading our program when I’m not able to.” He did not disclose the specific type of cancer he is battling, but reports indicate that he will undergo chemotherapy over the next six months.
Pikiell’s tenure at Rutgers, which began in 2016, has been marked by significant achievements, including leading the team to its first NCAA tournament appearances in 30 years in 2021 and 2022. His leadership has been instrumental in revitalising the Scarlet Knights’ basketball programme, and he remains optimistic about his recovery and the future of the team.
Keli Zinn, the Athletics Director at Rutgers, released a statement expressing the support of the university’s athletic community for Pikiell and his family during this challenging period. “Those of us who know Steve understand the determination and strength he brings to everything he does,” Zinn noted, emphasising Pikiell’s resilient spirit. She also praised Coach Knight’s readiness to step up in Pikiell’s absence, highlighting the commitment of the entire coaching staff to support both Pikiell and the student-athletes.
Although the timeline for Pikiell’s full return to coaching remains uncertain, the Rutgers community is rallying around him. Zinn called for support and encouragement for the Pikiell family, reflecting the collective sentiments of fans, players, and staff alike.
In his letter, Pikiell concluded on a hopeful note, stating, “Just as I ask my team to fight and embrace challenges head-on, I’m going to attack cancer the same way.” He expressed confidence in the support he has from his family, medical team, and the Rutgers community, reinforcing his belief that “great things lie ahead for our basketball program.”
The Scarlet Knights are scheduled to begin their season on November 6 against New Haven.
