Actor and voice artist Seth Green has revealed details about a vocal cord injury he sustained due to relentless overworking on multiple projects, including an array of popular animated series and video games. Speaking on *The McBride Rewind* podcast with host Josh McBride, the 52-year-old actor candidly shared his experience and the lessons he has learned about self-care.

During the podcast episode released on 8 September, Green reflected on a particularly intense period in his career where he juggled numerous demanding roles. “In a 24-month span, I was voice acting for *Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.*, *Family Guy*, *Robot Chicken*, and *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles*, among others,” he explained. He also took on additional work for the video game *Call of Duty*, which he admitted contributed significantly to his vocal strain.
Green described the challenges of managing such heavy workloads, emphasising the need for adequate rest between recordings. “I didn’t take care of myself and went straight from one project to the next,” he confessed. “You need more than a day in between to really recover.”
His work on *Call of Duty* particularly exacerbated his condition. With ten downloadable content voices to provide, each requiring extensive four-hour recording sessions, he found himself straining his voice. “It was worse than just talking; I had to yell and grunt frequently,” he recalled. “My voice was shredded.”
This excessive vocal use led to the development of a rare condition called chondroid metaplasia within his vocal folds. Green explained that this injury is typically associated with extreme athletes who experience constant trauma without proper recovery time. “The doctor said, ‘Well, you’re a vocal athlete,’” he commented, illustrating the severity of his situation.
Medical professionals noted that they had not encountered this condition in someone like Green before, leading them to consider him as a potential subject for a case study. To correct the damage, doctors required advanced surgical techniques involving scalpels and lasers. Fortunately, the procedure was successful.
Reflecting on his recovery journey, Green expressed gratitude for the progress he has made. “I’m definitely better at taking care of myself now,” he stated. However, he acknowledged that he has not yet regained complete access to his higher vocal registers. The doctors assured him that, with time and dedicated practice, he would be able to restore his voice.
Green’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-care in the demanding world of voice acting. As he shifts his focus towards recovery, he encourages others in similar lines of work to prioritise their health and take the necessary time for recuperation.
As one of the many multifaceted talents in the entertainment industry, Seth Green’s resilience in the face of adversity demonstrates his commitment to both his craft and his personal well-being. His openness about his struggles not only sheds light on the often-overlooked aspects of voice acting but also underscores the broader importance of health in high-pressure professions.
Moving forward, Green’s journey serves as an inspiration for both fans and fellow actors, emphasising that despite the challenges they may face, dedication to health and recovery can lead to a brighter and more sustainable future in their careers.
