New research has highlighted a potential health risk associated with the consumption of very hot beverages, indicating a correlation between high drink temperatures and an increased likelihood of developing a specific type of esophageal cancer. The findings stem from a comprehensive study involving nearly one million participants, published in the International Journal of Cancer.

The study, which surveyed over 977,000 individuals, discovered that those who prefer their drinks at a temperature deemed “very hot”—approximately 149 degrees Fahrenheit—may face a threefold increase in the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus compared to individuals who choose their beverages warm. Interestingly, those who consume drinks classified as “hot,” around 140 degrees Fahrenheit, exhibited double the cancer risk in comparison to their cooler-drinking counterparts.

Dr. Keren Papier, the lead researcher and senior nutritional epidemiologist at Oxford Population Health, noted in a statement from Cancer Research UK that while international evidence has linked the consumption of extremely hot beverages, such as mate tea typically enjoyed in South America, to a higher incidence of certain esophageal cancers, it was previously unclear whether this risk extended to the temperatures customarily found in Western cultures.
The crucial factor in this study lies within the temperature of the beverages consumed, rather than the specific type of drink. Participants provided self-reported data on their preferences, allowing researchers to establish a link between drinking habits and cancer risk. Alarmingly, participants who consumed six or more hot beverages daily displayed a 71% increase in risk for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus, regardless of whether they preferred their drinks “hot” or “very hot.”
The underlying mechanism suggested by researchers relates to thermal injury. According to the National Library of Medicine, drinking beverages at high temperatures can cause damage to the esophagus, fostering chronic inflammation that may contribute to the production of carcinogenic substances. Furthermore, this damage might compromise the esophagus’s protective lining, increasing vulnerability to other known carcinogens such as tobacco and alcohol.
Fiona Osgun, head of health information at Cancer Research UK, emphasised the importance of looking beyond beverage temperature to mitigate cancer risks. “The most significant steps toward reducing the risk of this type of cancer include avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol intake,” she stated. These lifestyle choices are critical in addressing broader factors that contribute to cancer development.
The research underscores the significance of awareness surrounding beverage temperature, as many individuals may not consider the risks tied to excessively hot drinks. It stands as a reminder that everyday habits can have profound effects on long-term health, particularly regarding conditions like esophageal cancer.
