An eight-year-old girl from Indiana has been hailed a heroine following a tragic car crash that resulted in the deaths of two adults and a child. The accident, which occurred on August 29 in Pike County, involved a vehicle driven by 41-year-old Amanda Wertman and her eight-year-old daughter, Michaela, who were both killed in the collision. Amelia Freeland, the young girl credited with helping to save her friends, was travelling home from a Girl Scouts trip at the time of the incident.

According to the Indiana State Police, the crash was instigated by a 24-year-old man fleeing police after a reported domestic violence incident. His vehicle collided head-on with the car driven by Wertman. Both the man and Amanda Wertman were pronounced dead at the scene, while Michaela succumbed to her injuries later at a nearby hospital.
In total, there were three children who survived the horrific crash, including Amelia, as well as eight-year-old Oaklie and five-year-old Theodore Wertman, Amanda’s son. Their survival, despite the circumstances, has stemmed from swift actions taken by young Amelia. A GoFundMe campaign established in her honour has since highlighted her courageous efforts.
Amelia’s mother, Tasha Cox, revealed to local media that her daughter had a clear recollection of the event. She explained, “She told us that the car flipped over and that the other car was on fire. She got unbuckled, got out, and then went to help the other kids unbuckle their seat belts.” According to Cox, the young girl was able to extricate both herself and her friend Theodore from the wreckage.
As part of their recovery journeys, a number of fundraising initiatives have been set up to support the surviving children. Each of them is now under the care of families and friends during their recovery periods. The GoFundMe campaigns have garnered significant attention and support from the community, allowing for assistance in both emotional and medical needs.
Amelia herself is currently recuperating from a compressed neck fracture, as confirmed by her mother. Cox indicated that the healing process could take four to six weeks. Meanwhile, Oaklie’s recovery has been slower, as she is dealing with two brain bleeds and is closely monitored by her family as her condition develops.
Theodore, on the other hand, has recently returned home from the hospital. Despite his physical recovery, he faces the emotional toll of losing both his mother and sister in the tragic accident. Support from the community is evidently crucial at this time as they navigate through these grief-stricken moments.
