A significant security incident unfolded on Sunday, 6 September, when Dr. Amy Acton, the Democratic nominee for governor of Ohio, was approached aggressively at the Canfield Fair. Dr. Acton, who previously held the position of public health director for the state, was reportedly addressing attendees when the situation escalated.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) confirmed on Monday that a man named Patrick M. Havas, 38, was apprehended after he surged towards Dr. Acton. In a statement, the OSHP detailed how Havas breached a crowd, knocking over several fairgoers in his attempt to reach the political figure. At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of a Taser and two firearms.
Following the altercation, Havas was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct as well as two counts of assault. He was first handed over to Canfield Fair Police before being transferred to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, and subsequently booked into the Mahoning County Jail.
Fortunately, Dr. Acton emerged from the incident unscathed. However, two elderly bystanders who were knocked to the ground chose not to pursue further medical treatment after being assessed for injuries. Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene acknowledged this aspect while providing updates on the incident.
The OSHP has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to Havas’s actions, although further details have yet to be disclosed. Both the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the local sheriff’s office are coordinating efforts as they delve into the matter.
In response to the frightening event, the Acton campaign issued a statement through Communications Director Addie Bullock, who expressed gratitude for the prompt response of law enforcement. Bullock condemned the violence, stating, “This kind of violence has no place in Ohio,” emphasising that Dr. Acton is committed to opposing the hostility that divides communities.
Governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, weighed in on the matter, confirming he had spoken with Dr. Acton following the incident. He reassured the public that she was well and relayed that she had been engaged with attendees at the Mahoning County Democrat booth when the situation escalated. In a statement shared via social media, DeWine strongly condemned any form of violence at public events, reiterating that such threats are intolerable.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy also reproached the violence in a statement made on social media platform X. A spokesperson for Ramaswamy stressed that politicians should be able to interact with constituents without concerns for their safety, categorising the incident as completely unacceptable.
The event highlights ongoing discussions around safety at public gatherings and the implications of the open-carry laws in Ohio, which permit residents to carry concealed firearms without a permit. Following the incident, officials are expected to closely examine the existing regulations regarding firearm possession and public safety.
