In an inspiring twist of fate, a Texas couple has transformed an ordinary excavation project into a popular family retreat. Garrett Newman, originally utilising the land for construction work, inadvertently created a swimming pond that has since become a beloved gathering spot for his newly blended family.
In 2015, while building his home on a sprawling 11-acre plot in Texas, Garrett dug a sizeable hole to source dirt for the construction. However, instead of leaving the pit empty, he decided to maximise its potential by converting it into a pond. With the initial intent of utilising the excavation for building purposes, Garrett’s vision quickly shifted once he realised the enjoyment a pond could bring to his family.
After marrying his wife, Sara, the pond truly came to life. The Newmans now have eight children between them, and the pond serves as the perfect backdrop for summer fun, complete with swimming, fishing, and floating in the water. “I don’t think he was thinking of a swimming hole at the time,” Sara, 42, recalled in an interview.
The project took two days of intensive digging, resulting in a hole measuring 80 by 80 feet and reaching depths of up to 18 feet. Garrett’s investment was approximately £3,500 to create the pond, while filling it with water was left to nature. Thanks to the rains that followed, within just a month, the previously empty pit transformed into a verdant aquatic retreat.
“The pond is stocked with fish, and Garrett and the kids enjoy fishing there,” Sara revealed. After filling the pond, the couple took the initiative to introduce fish to its ecosystem, further enhancing the outdoor experience for their children.
What began as a functional excavation has since evolved into a cherished focal point for the Newman family. The pond’s charm and simplicity resonate deeply with them, particularly as it accommodates their country lifestyle. Sara mentioned, “We love going out and floating in the water on a hot Texas day.” Such family outings involve not just relaxation but also opportunities to connect with nature, as the children often catch fish and even spot turtles while they float on rafts.
The Newman family have even gone a step further by introducing a sandy beach area for more recreational activities. Their pond has become a vibrant hub for family gatherings and social events, with a recent pond party drawing friends from the local community. Emphasising the casual charm of country living, Sara shared her fondness for the outdoors, stating, “When you grow up in the country, a little dirt and pond water isn’t gross.”
One of the notable advantages of the pond is its low-maintenance nature. Unlike traditional swimming pools that necessitate constant cleaning and chemical treatments, the Newman’s pond requires minimal upkeep. The family cleans it intermittently, tends to the surrounding landscape, and occasionally adds blue dye to enhance its appearance. “A pool is a big undertaking and cost,” Sara noted, explaining their preference for the pond over the more demanding responsibility of a conventional swimming space.
The family of ten fully appreciates their unique aquatic haven, deeming it perfect for their needs. “For us it’s not a necessity at the moment,” she affirmed, confidently expressing that the family is content without a swimming pool.
