Renhold Mack, a distinguished music producer, is preparing to auction a collection of memorabilia from his time working with the iconic band Queen, with many items reflecting his close friendship with the late frontman Freddie Mercury. Mack, who is now 77, collaborated with Mercury and the band during a pivotal period in their career while stationed at Musicland Studios in Munich.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Mack recounted how his bond with Mercury blossomed, ultimately resulting in the rock icon becoming the godfather of Mack’s youngest son. The two developed a friendship that extended beyond the studio, with Mercury demonstrating a down-to-earth spirit despite his remarkable fame. The auction coincides with what would have been Mercury’s 80th birthday, adding a poignant touch to the event.
Among the 80 items set to be sold at Propstore’s upcoming Music Live Auction are personal effects that highlight the impressive creative journey shared between the two. It was at the same time Mack was producing Queen’s 1982 album **Hot Space** that his wife gave birth to their son, John Frederick, affectionately known to his family as “little Freddie.” Mack recalls a light-hearted moment where his wife jested, saying, “It’s probably easier to conceive and give birth to a child than you guys getting an album done.”
Mercury’s graciousness shone through during the christening of little Freddie, where he was delighted to undertake the responsibility of being a godfather. Mack reminisced about the singer’s thoughtfulness during significant family occasions and shared how Mercury would frequently send birthday cards, Valentine’s greetings, and Christmas messages, even when travelling.
Mack fondly remembers a particular instance when Mercury visited their home and noticed their modest toaster could accommodate only four slices of bread at a time. Taking it upon himself to remedy this, Mercury arranged for a six-slice Dualit toaster to be gifted to the family. This gesture encapsulated the warmth of the relationship they shared, a testament to Mercury’s character offstage.
Another cherished anecdote involves Mercury surprising little Freddie with a special rocking horse, which the young boy found daunting. Along with this gift, Mercury presented him with a towering teddy bear that has travelled extensively, accompanying the family on journeys across Europe and America. With a hint of nostalgia, Mack commented on the bear’s remarkable journey, now infused with sentimental value.
As Mack prepares to auction these treasured items, including a Yamaha C3 grand piano prominently played by Mercury, he reflects on his son’s view regarding parting with these mementoes. “It was a bit hard for little Freddie to give that bear away, but he wrote, ‘It’s not the object, but it’s the thought,’ which always stays with him,” said Mack, showcasing an understanding of the deeper emotional ties attached to these possessions.
Mack has taken a similar stance in letting go of the memorabilia, valuing the memories over the items themselves. “We hope to find individuals who have a genuine interest in Freddie’s life, so these items won’t merely adorn a shelf. They deserve a meaningful place,” he articulated, highlighting his desire for the items to continue their story in the hands of true fans.
The Propstore Music Live Auction is scheduled to take place from October 1 to 2, with registrations now open. With a total value estimated at around $4 million, this auction presents an opportunity for fans and collectors alike to obtain a piece of rock history.
