A year has passed since the untimely death of eight-year-old Eloise “Lulu” Peck, who tragically lost her life during devastating floods in Texas. In a heartfelt tribute to her legacy, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has announced that she will be posthumously awarded the title of Kid of the Year.
Eloise was among 27 children who perished during the catastrophic flooding at Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, which occurred on Independence Day. The rising waters of the Guadalupe River claimed more than 100 lives in total, leaving behind a profound sense of grief in Kerr County and the surrounding areas. For her family, this award isn’t just recognition; it is a promise they made to themselves after losing Lulu.
“We’re going to live for Lulu,” stated her mother, Missy Rogers Peck. This commitment emerged from a moment of shared sorrow with her sister as they processed the devastating news of Eloise’s passing. The Peck family has since channelled their grief into action by launching the Living for Lulu foundation, dedicated to animal welfare and helping children in need.
Missy, who runs an event planning business, described her daughter as a “loving and compassionate child” who had a profound affinity for all creatures, including the smallest of insects. Lulu’s love for animals motivated her family to honour this passion through their foundation, which aims to ensure that her spirit continues to inspire kindness in the world.
Eloise was born in September 2016, named after the character from Kay Thompson’s beloved children’s book, *Eloise at the Plaza*. She shared a special bond with her younger brother, Holden, and often played the role of nurturing sibling. Following her death, Holden, now seven, has been comforted by cherished memories, as their family frequently reminisces about Lulu’s lively spirit.
The Peck family remembers her unique personality, particularly her penchant for silly dances and light-hearted pranks. Missy often recalls moments spent preparing for “midnight snacks” with her children, a cherished routine that provided a glimpse into their daily lives filled with laughter. It was during these moments that they bonded, allowing them to learn about each other’s joys and experiences.
One of the most endearing aspects of Lulu’s life was her profound connection with animals. From family pets such as their Boston terrier, Ollie, to the wild creatures on their ranch, her love for animals was evident. After visiting a neighbour’s home, she often brought home kittens, hoping to keep them despite her father’s allergies. Her creativity shone through when she sold lemonade with a whimsical sign reading, “Lemonade is £5. Dogs Drink Free.”
The unexpected loss of Ollie to an accident last April prompted discussions about death within the family. In a poignant moment, Eloise told her mother, “Mommy, I’m not afraid of death,” expressing her belief that their pets were in a better place. This conversation, though unsettling for Missy at the time, has since provided her with “so much peace,” reinforcing her belief that Eloise is now surrounded by beloved animals, including Ollie.
Through their foundation, the Peck family has found community support and purpose in the midst of their grief. “It embodies who she was, who Lulu is, which was just love,” Missy reflected, describing the foundation’s mission to promote empathy towards both animals and children.
On October 8, the Peck family will accept the ASPCA Kid of the Year award during the organisation’s 2026 Humane Awards at The Plaza in New York City. Missy conveyed how much this recognition means to their family, imagining Eloise’s mixed feelings of excitement and embarrassment over the attention.
“She just loved with all of her heart,” Missy said, affirming that Lulu’s genuine spirit would be present with them on such a significant occasion.
