Concerns are mounting among parents in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as schools reopen against a backdrop of a severe Ebola outbreak that continues to wreak havoc across the region. The resurgence of the virus has prompted families to question the safety of returning to educational facilities amid a rising death toll and a surge in confirmed cases.

As of early September, the Congolese Public Health Ministry reported a harrowing tally of 3,007 deaths attributed to Ebola, with 6,186 confirmed cases. This outbreak is unprecedented, noted by health authorities as the fastest-spreading on record. Data from the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that this outbreak surpassed the grim threshold of 1,000 cases in just 40 days, a stark contrast to the 2018 outbreak, which took nearly eight months to reach the same number.

The rapid spread of the virus has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, particularly among parents. In Ituri province, Aimerance Vahweka expressed her concerns, stating that she has opted to keep her child at home due to a perceived lack of adequate preventive measures within schools. “I do not really see an increase in prevention measures,” Vahweka remarked, highlighting widespread apprehension in the community.

Ebola is primarily transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected individual, including during funerals where traditional practices may involve close contact with the deceased. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that the virus can also survive on objects contaminated with these bodily fluids, complicating efforts to contain its spread.
The outbreak has been linked specifically to a rare strain called the Bundibugyo virus, which, as NPR reports, is not routinely included in standard Ebola testing protocols. This oversight may have contributed to the delayed recognition of the outbreak, with experts suggesting the virus could have been circulating undetected since February. The absence of immediate identification has exacerbated the crisis, hindering containment measures and placing additional strain on health services.
Currently, while there is widespread acknowledgment within the medical community of the challenges posed by the Bundibugyo strain, no vaccine or definitive treatment has been developed specifically for it. However, the World Health Organisation does state that the Ervebo vaccine, which offers some level of protection against other Ebola strains, can be utilised to mitigate risks as health professionals strive to curtail the outbreak’s impact.
Health workers in the DRC have donned personal protective equipment (PPE) at various points, notably in high-risk areas such as ports, to combat the spread of the virus. Their efforts are critical, as the Ebola virus is not airborne, meaning it requires close contact for transmission. Nevertheless, it remains highly infectious; an infected individual does not pose a contagion risk until they exhibit symptoms.
The initial symptoms of Ebola can take up to 21 days to manifest after exposure, starting with non-specific signs such as fever, headaches, and joint pain. As the disease progresses, patients may experience more severe symptoms, including uncontrolled bleeding from various bodily orifices.
With educational institutions now reopening, the concerns from parents are likely to persist unless robust measures are implemented to ensure student safety. Many families are hoping for increased preventive protocols, which may be vital in restoring confidence in returning to school amidst a public health emergency.
As the DRC grapples with this ongoing crisis, the urgent need for a consolidated response is clear. The complexity of the situation, compounded by the unique nature of the Bundibugyo strain, underlines the importance of vigilance in monitoring, education, and health care access, particularly for vulnerable populations like children.
