A 77-year-old woman from England has recently reconnected with the daughter she was forced to give up for adoption 62 years ago. Avril’s reunion with her daughter, Eleanor, took place after a long journey filled with heartache and hope, facilitated by the popular British television show, *Long Lost Family*.

After spending just eight weeks together, Avril was compelled to put her daughter up for adoption, a decision that weighed heavily on her heart. Despite the years apart, Avril never gave up on the hope of one day finding Eleanor.
The reunion was made possible after Avril’s daughter, Sharon, encouraged her to reach out to the producers of *Long Lost Family*. Having seen the end of an episode, Avril decided to take a leap of faith. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my life,” she expressed during an interview on the morning programme *This Morning*.
Reflecting on her memories at the mother and baby home, Avril described the painful experience of losing Eleanor. “I think because it involved so much pain, I blocked it out,” she revealed. Although she had limited memories of their time together, she remembered caring for Eleanor and the bittersweet farewell that followed. In her final moments with her daughter, Avril met Eleanor’s adoptive parents and felt a sense of relief knowing she would be placed in a loving home.
After parting with Eleanor, Avril returned to Newcastle approximately 60 miles away, where she struggled to reintegrate into normal life. “It took me about two years to sort of… I never came to terms, never ever, but it took me about two years to want to be here,” she shared, describing her emotional turmoil during that challenging period.
It was only decades later, when she was in her 40s, that Avril received a photograph of Eleanor, which she placed on her bedside table. Meanwhile, Eleanor, who had been renamed following her adoption, grew up knowing about her birth mother. She recalled how her adoptive parents kept her informed about Avril’s decision, nurturing her understanding of the complexity surrounding adoption.
Eleanor reflected on her own experiences during an emotional segment of *This Morning*, sharing how the thought of being separated from her own child at such a young age instilled a sense of empathy for Avril. “When I had Bex, my daughter who is 38, just thinking of someone taking her away from me at 6 to 8 weeks old made me feel intense emotions,” she remarked.
Growing up in Cumbria in a supportive household, Eleanor described her childhood as happy and fulfilling, surrounded by friends and family. Initially, she hesitated to search for her birth mother due to concerns about disrupting Avril’s life and whether it would cause any distress to her family. “I never felt rejected; I was always told I was special,” she clarified on the show.
