In an extraordinary twist of fate, Sara and Bladimil Arroyo Montalvo found themselves celebrating their love in the skies above the United States. The couple’s unconventional elopement took place on August 13, when they boarded their first-ever Southwest Airlines flight bound for Las Vegas. With no desire to endure the usual wedding planning stress, the couple decided to marry in a spontaneous setting, leading to a delightful surprise orchestrated by the airline’s crew.

Sara, 30, and Bladimil, 46, were preparing to write their own vows when they boarded the fully-booked flight. In a bid to find some privacy, Sara approached a flight attendant named Shalee, inquiring about extra seating. Although Shalee was unable to meet their request, she did something even more unexpected: she rallied the cabin crew to organise an inflight wedding for the couple.

“She put so much thought into this,” Sara explained. “It was unbelievable how quickly the plan came together.” Midway through the flight, the couple was summoned to the back of the plane, initially confused but soon realising they were about to become the centre of attention.
As the flight attendants prepared for the ceremony, Sara was handed a makeshift wedding outfit made of toilet paper and a crown fashioned from the same material. “I immediately got nervous,” she recounted. “I was like, ‘Wait, WHAT!’” Shalee assured the couple that the flight would still continue safely, as the captain, a long-time ordained minister, would officiate the wedding via the public address system.
Amusement and laughter ensued as Sara donned her unconventional wedding attire, with passengers observing the unfolding scene with a mix of confusion and delight. Bladimil later recalled his surprise upon learning the pilot would be presiding over their ceremony. The light-hearted atmosphere quickly transformed the entire flight into a celebration, with 178 passengers now playing the role of witnesses.
Following an announcement over the PA system, the passengers joined in as wedding guests. “Every guest on that flight was a really good sport about it,” Sara expressed, noting the supportive spirit that enveloped the cabin. “They were all in good spirits and down for a good time. It was really beautiful!”
The moment was captured by one of the passengers and later shared on Instagram, where Sara thanked Southwest Airlines for making their elopement so uniquely special. The airline issued a statement congratulating the couple and expressing its appreciation for crew members who make memorable experiences possible for passengers.
Reflecting on the celebration, Bladimil shared his fondness for the friendly interactions with the flight staff. He noted, “They turned a long flight into a celebration,” praising their engaging nature and ability to elevate the atmosphere. Sara cherished the smiles and enthusiasm from the crew, saying, “It really meant so much to me that they thought to even do this.”
While the impromptu wedding was a joyous culmination of their love story, it also held deeper meaning for Bladimil. Having faced a tumultuous past, including an 18-year prison sentence for a crime he did not commit, the nuptials represented a turning point in his life. “I never imagined that this level of happiness actually existed,” he stated, reflecting on the challenges he overcame.
Sara and Bladimil first crossed paths in New Orleans two years after his release from prison, and they became engaged in 2025. Their official wedding took place the day after their flight, at the iconic Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, where they exchanged heartfelt vows in the presence of close relatives.
Post-ceremony, the couple enjoyed a celebratory dinner at the Prime Steakhouse in the Bellagio Hotel, before trying their luck at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, where their elopement journey continued. They ended their exhilarating trip with a performance by DJ Pauly D at Marquee Dayclub.
In recounting their unique wedding experience, Sara and Bladimil expressed immense happiness and gratitude. “We couldn’t have pictured it any other way,” Sara summarised. “We made some amazing memories and, in the end, got to commit to forever together.” Their extraordinary journey not only highlighted the spontaneity of love but also reaffirmed the goodness present in unexpected places.
