Dale “Greybeard” Sanders has set a remarkable new milestone in the world of long-distance hiking by reclaiming the title of the oldest person to complete the Appalachian Trail at the age of 91. This remarkable achievement came on August 31, 2026, when Sanders stood triumphantly at the summit of Mt. Katahdin.

Sanders first established his record in 2017 aged 82, but it was broken in 2021 when fellow hiker MJ “Nimblewill Nomad” Eberhart completed the trail at the age of 83. Determined to reclaim his title, Sanders embarked on a six-month journey that demonstrated both his physical capabilities and his enduring spirit.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Sanders acknowledged the physical challenges that come with age. “It’s harder on you physically when you get older and you simply cannot do what a 21-year-old can,” he stated. His experience as a senior solo hiker has made him a unique figure in the hiking community, as he is the only individual in their nineties to have completed the entire trail.

The Appalachian Trail, which stretches approximately 2,190 miles, is renowned for its rigorous terrain. Sanders described the final ascent to Katahdin as particularly taxing, highlighting a harrowing moment just moments from the summit when he fell and experienced intense pain in his thigh and knee. “It was so bad. I was there lying on the rocks, couldn’t hike up, couldn’t hike down,” he recalled. However, after some time, he found the strength to carry on and reached the summit.
Originally from Kentucky, Sanders now resides in Tennessee where he attributes his achievements to a lifetime of maintaining an active lifestyle. His journey in physical fitness began during his years in the Navy, where he partook in competitive diving and spearfishing. Following his time in the military, he earned a graduate degree in Parks and Recreation and continued to promote active living.
At 91, Sanders is not only a passionate hiker but also a dedicated family man, fathering three children and doting on several grandchildren. His past adventures include paddling the entire length of the Mississippi River, a feat he completed at 80 for diabetes awareness. Additionally, he holds a Guinness World Record for being the oldest person to accomplish a Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim hike of the Grand Canyon at the age of 87.
Despite his recent accomplishment, Sanders remains resolute about taking on new challenges. He has expressed a desire to break his own record for the Grand Canyon hike but plans to wait before attempting it again. In the meantime, his adventurous spirit has led him to accept an invitation to scuba dive at the Atlanta Aquarium, a venture he eagerly anticipates.
Sanders’ journey has inspired many, demonstrating that age need not be a barrier to pursuing one’s passions. He embodies the ethos that with determination and an active lifestyle, extraordinary achievements are possible at any stage in life. “I’m not done yet,” he insists, showing no signs of slowing down. As he prepares for his next adventure, it is clear that Dale Sanders will continue to make waves in the outdoor community and inspire others to follow in his footsteps.
