A young mother from South Carolina has shared her remarkable journey of resilience and hope, following the premature birth of her son, River, who was born with a rare kidney condition. Ally Abbott, 21, detailed her emotional rollercoaster as she fought for her son’s life against all odds.

Abbott recalls a wave of anxiety during her early pregnancy, particularly since it was her first. She diligently followed health guidelines and frequently checked on her baby’s wellbeing. However, her world spiralled into despair during a routine 20-week anatomy scan, where she received the devastating diagnosis of bilateral renal agenesis. This rare condition occurs when the kidneys fail to develop, and medical professionals informed Abbott that her baby was unlikely to survive.
“It was like my world was crashing down,” Abbey explained. “I kept asking myself, ‘Why us? Why my baby?’ I couldn’t comprehend how we found ourselves in this situation.” She described how the diagnosis forced her to confront a grim reality, leading her to quit her job and retreat into a state of grief. “I even set up a memorial table for him, as the doctors advised me to begin mourning the baby I hadn’t even met yet,” she said.
Despite the bleak prognosis, Abbott held onto hope due to her son’s steady heartbeat and his movements. “My baby was fighting, so I felt compelled to fight for him in return,” she said. She committed to exploring potential treatment options for River, believing he deserved every chance at life, no matter the circumstances.
Through extensive research, Abbott discovered a specialised programme in Nebraska that offered amniotic fluid infusions to pregnancy patients in similar situations. At 24 weeks into her pregnancy, she began making weekly flights over 1,300 miles for the treatment that would give her son a better chance at survival. Although the travel required considerable physical and emotional energy, Abbott found joy in watching River respond positively to the injections. “After each infusion, I was able to see him growing and thriving,” she said.
River was born on Thanksgiving Day, weighing only 3.1 pounds. Abbey described the delivery as traumatic, occurring under challenging circumstances. “The hospital had already prepared for the worst, and I was left without pain relief during a very difficult labour,” she recounted. “When River was born, he wasn’t breathing, and the medical staff rushed to resuscitate him.”
Following his birth, River was airlifted to Levine Children’s Hospital in North Carolina, where a dedicated neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) began working round the clock to support his fragile life. “The time spent in the NICU is unlike anything else,” Abbott reflected. “Every day involved a complex mix of hope and fear; I prayed continuously for stable days and small victories.”
Abbott came to appreciate the strength of her connection with River. “It made me so proud to be his mother, especially during those challenging moments. His nurses became our second family, and they cared for him as if he were their own,” she noted.
After 195 tumultuous days in the NICU, Abbott was finally granted permission to bring her son home. “Walking into my house with him felt surreal,” she said. “I was constantly reminded of all those doctors who doubted his survival, yet here we are, together.”
Now, at nine months old, River is thriving and brings immense joy to his mother’s life. “He’s such a happy baby, gaining weight and enjoying purées,” Abbott shares. They face a new challenge ahead, however, as River will require bladder reconstruction surgery in the future before he can undergo a transplant due to being born without a bladder.
Despite the trials they’ve faced, Abbott is cherishing every moment with her son. “I am fully present with him and thankful for every day we have together,” she stated. River continues to exceed expectations, and Abbott is excited to see him embrace a life full of possibilities.
Abbott concluded, “My baby is defying the odds and proving everyone wrong daily. It’s a miracle we’ve come this far, and I cherish the ordinary moments we once thought would never happen.” Her story serves as a poignant reminder of hope, determination, and the strength of a mother’s love against seemingly insurmountable challenges.
