In a distressing case of animal neglect, two dogs have been rescued from horrifying conditions in a Bronx basement. The dogs, affectionately named Ren and Stimpy, were discovered in a state of severe neglect, surrounded by their own waste and suffering from infections, when a newly appointed superintendent of the apartment building found them on Friday, August 28.

According to the New York-based charity, NYC Second Chance Rescue, the previous superintendent had become terminally ill and abandoned the dogs, leaving them to fend for themselves in deplorable circumstances. In an emotional post on Instagram, the rescue organisation referred to the scene as a “devastating plea for help,” and shared stark images that revealed the dogs’ untenable conditions.
The rescue team reported that one of the dogs was particularly afflicted, suffering from extensive matting, which allowed maggots to burrow into the skin underneath. “He is being eaten alive,” they noted, indicating the severe level of neglect Ren was experiencing. The second dog, Stimpy, was also found to have deeply matted fur, infested with fleas, alongside open sores indicative of a serious lack of care.
Emergency veterinary treatment was the only option for the dogs, as the discovery was made on a Friday evening. Consequently, they were rushed to an emergency animal hospital, which often incurs higher fees than standard veterinary clinics. The rescuers expressed their determination to assist the animals, stating, “But we are getting them out. We are not leaving them behind.”
Though the dogs have been removed from their dire situation, they remain in critical condition. The organisation has highlighted that both dogs are still at risk, with Stimpy’s situation being particularly precarious due to his exposed sores and ongoing infections.
