At just 19 years of age, Baylee Laine made a life-changing decision that would see her embrace the role of a full-time parent to her four younger siblings. This remarkable journey began during her high school years, as she navigated a turbulent family environment exacerbated by her parents’ separation and the subsequent involvement of child protective services (CPS).

Laine’s challenges began early in life. By the age of eight, she was in the care of her father after her parents’ tumultuous split. Meanwhile, her mother had welcomed four more children with different partners. As Laine grew older, she often found herself stepping in to help care for these younger siblings, which led to overwhelming pressure as she balanced her responsibilities with her own aspirations, including a promising softball scholarship.
As she approached her senior year, Baylee felt torn between following her dreams of playing softball at college and supporting her siblings, whose needs were growing more demanding. “I was a softball player and had a full ride to play,” she recounted. “But I also sensed that these kids would be left alone if I chose to leave.” It was this profound realisation that ultimately inspired her to remain at home and take on the role of caregiver.
Despite the challenges, Laine persevered, attending community college while juggling two jobs. Through fundraising efforts, including a GoFundMe campaign that garnered nearly £8,000, she was able to engage a paralegal to help navigate the complex foster care system. After two years of legal battles to secure custody, she was able to bring her siblings into her home at the age of 19.
On October 25, 2017, Laine officially took custody of her siblings. Two years later, she successfully adopted them, becoming the legal guardian of her now 17-year-old brother, 14-year-old sister, and 12-year-old twins, as well as welcoming a biological daughter of her own, who is now three. “When they dropped them off, it was instant ‘mom mode’—there were no breaks,” she explained, adding that she felt immense pressure to provide a stable and loving environment.
In the early days of fostering, Laine faced significant stress, and the constant worry about her siblings’ wellbeing weighed heavily on her. Notably, her biological mother had been incarcerated since 2023, which compounded the challenges of parenting in the foster care system, especially with court dates and visitation schedules to adhere to. “Once we finalised the adoption, everything started to feel a little calmer,” she stated, appreciating the freedom from those restrictions.
While Laine was determined to provide the best for her siblings, her own aspirations took a back seat. She momentarily paused her college education and eliminated extracurricular activities for the sake of their wellbeing. “I was juggling so much. It felt like I was ‘zombied out,’ just going through the motions as I focused on my responsibilities,” she admitted. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Laine noted a turning point for the family as they spent more time together at home, finally feeling a sense of stability that had previously felt elusive.
The challenge of overcoming the siblings’ past trauma took considerable time and effort, but Laine is proud to share that her family is now thriving. Recently, she took to TikTok to share her story, inspired by a viral trend that celebrated single mothers. Posting a montage of their journey together attracted significant attention, amassing six million views and resonating with many viewers who shared their own experiences.
For Laine, the outpouring of support from the online community has been heartwarming. “It was validating to see that our experiences are shared by so many others,” she remarked, emphasising that while each situation is unique, there is comfort in shared understanding. “You don’t know until you try and connect with them.”
Having received numerous messages from people seeking advice, Laine is keen to encourage others in similar situations to consider their paths. “If you’re contemplating stepping up for your siblings, know that you’re already ahead by simply having the thought,” she noted. Laine’s story serves as a testament to resilience and the profound impact of family bonds, proving that complex situations can lead to extraordinarily fulfilling lives built on love and commitment.
