9-Month-Old Baby Killed After Driver, Who Was Allegedly Unlicensed, Struck Mother Pushing Stroller in Store Parking Lot

A tragic incident unfolded in a grocery store parking lot in New Jersey, resulting in the death of a nine-month-old baby boy after being struck by a car. The accident, which occurred on Friday, 28 August, has led to the arrest of two women, who now face serious charges in connection with the incident.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the mother was pushing a stroller containing her two young children—a five-year-old daughter and her infant son—when they were hit by a Ford Fusion driven by Maria CobonGuzman, aged 20. The incident took place at approximately midday at an NPGS grocery store in Jackson Township.

Emergency services were alerted and quickly arrived on the scene. The mother and her children were immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical personnel, the nine-month-old was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Fortunately, both the mother and her five-year-old daughter remain hospitalised but are reported to be in stable condition.

Investigation details revealed that CobonGuzman had never held a valid driver’s licence in New Jersey or any other state, according to the Prosecutor’s Office. This critical piece of information raises significant concerns about the circumstances leading up to the tragic event.

The second arrested individual, Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, aged 22, reportedly was aware of CobonGuzman’s lack of a valid driver’s licence. Despite this knowledge, she allowed CobonGuzman to operate the vehicle. Both women now face serious legal implications as a result of this decision.

Following their arrest, the women were taken to Ocean County Jail, where they remain in custody while awaiting a preliminary hearing. CobonGuzman faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, operating a motor vehicle without a licence during a fatal incident, and two counts of assault by automobile. Meanwhile, Lazaro-Flores has been charged with knowingly creating a substantial risk of death to others.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash, with the case being handled by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s vehicular homicide squad and high-tech crime unit, along with local police departments and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office’s crime scene investigation unit.
