Taylor Swift, the acclaimed singer-songwriter, has made headlines by donating £50,000 to a GoFundMe campaign set up for Ashley Taunton, a brave mother of three who was injured while assisting teenagers involved in a car accident. The incident occurred in July on a rainy day in Rhode Island when Taunton spotted a vehicle that had hydroplaned.
Ashley Taunton, a 42-year-old certified nursing assistant from Connecticut, was driving on I-95 South with her youngest daughter when she noticed a situation requiring immediate attention ahead. In an act of selflessness, she exited her vehicle to offer help. “When I see there’s somebody in trouble, I tend to want to go help,” Taunton explained, describing her instinct to assist those in need.
Approaching the stranded vehicle, Taunton discovered that the occupants were three teenagers, who appeared to be shaken but relatively unharmed. However, the situation quickly escalated when another car lost control and headed directly towards them. In a split second, Taunton pushed one of the teenagers, known later as Vinny, out of the way, thereby sacrificing her own safety.
“I just remember being on the ground and I could see my ankle was just hanging there,” Taunton recounted. Following the impact, she struggled to breathe and feared for her life, knowing she was seriously injured. Her daughter rushed to her side, offering comfort until help arrived.
Paramedics quickly transported Taunton to Rhode Island Hospital, where she faced multiple life-threatening injuries, including a ruptured diaphragm, lacerations on her liver and spleen, and several rib fractures. Although the doctors could not provide a precise timeline for her recovery, they estimated that it could take up to a year, including extensive physical therapy.
From her hospital bed, Taunton expressed a profound sense of gratitude. “I am so in awe of how evident God’s hand has been in all of this,” she said. Remarkably, she later discovered that Vinny was the son of a long-time friend, leading to poignant reflections on fate and connections.
The GoFundMe campaign, initially created to support Taunton and her family during her recovery, has garnered over £64,000. In addition to this, a Meal Train initiative has raised more than £16,000 to assist with meal preparation for the family. Community support has been overwhelming, underscoring the impact of Taunton’s act of bravery.
Taunton’s situation has prompted introspection about the preciousness of life. She expressed a renewed commitment to making meaningful connections, stating, “Life is very busy and it’s easy to postpone plans, especially with friends and loved ones. I don’t want to do that anymore.” She hopes to embrace life’s fleeting moments in the wake of her harrowing experience.
In a separate interview, Taunton’s friend Jamie O’Rourke, who recognised her connection to Vinny, emphasised Taunton’s courageous actions. “She was so courageous to put herself in danger,” O’Rourke stated, celebrating Taunton’s willingness to safeguard others.
