In an imaginative project that has captured the attention of millions, Chester Walsh, a 29-year-old prop maker from Northamptonshire, has transformed his backyard into a spaceship-inspired retreat for social gatherings. Over a span of three months and at a cost of £9,000, Walsh’s remarkable construction features a bar, a versatile seating booth that can double as a bed, and a faux window that creates the illusion of looking out into space.
Walsh, who shares his creative endeavours on social media under the handle @chaptersofchester, has been an enthusiastic fan of sci-fi and comic books for much of his life. The idea for the spaceship hangout originated while he was contemplating a “summer house” design. “I wanted it to look like a spaceship while also being a functional space for socialising,” he explained. This isn’t Walsh’s first foray into turning mundane outdoor spaces into whimsical creations. Previously, he had modified a shed into a tiki bar and adorned his garden cabin with Star Wars-themed decorations.
The timing for this ambitious project could not have been better. With his home undergoing renovations, Walsh found himself without access to his usual workshop and sought to keep himself occupied. “I realised it was the perfect time to take on a project that could not only expand my portfolio but also possibly attract new clients,” he remarked.
Before construction began, Walsh extensively researched and created 3D models to guide his project. Inspired predominantly by the Intersystem Transport vehicle featured in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, he allowed flexibility in his design while drawing ideas from various other sources within the sci-fi genre. “I discovered I had enough space for a semi-circular sofa, which I was pleased about,” he noted, expressing satisfaction with how the project evolved over time.
The build kicked off with the daunting task of excavation, laying a robust reinforced concrete foundation that would support the unique structure. Partnering with a glamping pod company, Walsh developed a custom timber frame held up by 100 pedestal supports, allowing for airflow beneath and giving the impression of a hovering craft. The frame was then encased in plywood and waterproofed with EPDM rubber, followed by the shaping of the exterior using EVA foam and strengthening it further with fiberglass.
Impressively, Walsh undertook nearly the entire project solo, with some electrical assistance from a professional electrician to facilitate power to the space. With prior construction experience gained from collaborating with his father, he was well-equipped to tackle the various challenges presented by the build, although he admitted that working with fiberglass presented a steep learning curve. “It was considerably more challenging than previous projects,” he confessed.
Once the exterior was successfully constructed, Walsh shifted his focus to crafting an immersive interior that echoed the aesthetics of the sci-fi films he adores. Drawing inspiration from the Millennium Falcon as it appeared in “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, Walsh selected a clean design with smooth-edged white panels against a contrasting black backdrop. The interior boasts an oval doorway surrounded by intricate paneling and a multifunctional seating booth that comfortably accommodates an adult.
In a nod to Star Wars lore, the ship’s decor draws from various elements including lighting inspired by the Death Star and flooring echoes reminiscent of Disney’s now-defunct Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. The crowning feature of the interior is a cleverly concealed monitor that plays visuals of space, simulating a view into the depths of the galaxy.
Since documenting his progress online, Walsh’s work has gained an astonishing following, racking up over 2.5 million views across several platforms. He has shared this remarkable journey through a series of 19 detailed posts, which have encouraged viewers to embark on their own DIY adventures.
His labour of love has drawn admiration from family, friends, and neighbours alike, many of whom have shown keen interest in the project. One supportive neighbour helped him dig the foundation, while others expressed their amazement at the final product. “They are excitedly taking photos and videos whenever they stop by to see it,” Walsh shared, pleased by the positive feedback.
Despite the ship’s ethereal design, Walsh also prioritised functionality. He envisioned the space as a hub for hosting friends, allowing for multiple conversations to take place simultaneously, catering to different interests. “There have definitely been a few memorable nights with friends in the ship,” he remarked excitedly.
Reflecting on one particularly amusing evening, Walsh recounted a funny moment where a friend, after a few drinks, decided to spend the night in the spaceship, nestled on the curved seating. “Seeing the ship used in such an immersive way was not only hilarious but incredibly rewarding,” he concluded.
