Josh Radnor Thinks of “HIMYM”’s Ted Mosby as a ‘Younger’ and ‘Annoying’ Brother, Who Often Crossed the Line into ‘Stalking’

Josh Radnor, best known for his portrayal of Ted Mosby on the beloved CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” has recently shared insights into his experience on the show during an episode of the “Half the Picture” podcast hosted by Billy Barnell. The actor reflected on the complexities of bringing the character to life for nine seasons—an experience that he describes as at times overwhelming and claustrophobic.

Originally premiering in 2005, “How I Met Your Mother” quickly became a staple of American television, running for a total of nine years before concluding in 2014. While Radnor acknowledges the growth of both himself and Ted throughout the series, he revealed that the weight of playing a single character across 208 episodes proved challenging. “You get into it because you want to play this role and then this role and then this role, and then you get cast in a show that goes nine years and it’s like your psyche was not programmed for that,” he explained.

As the series gained popularity, Radnor found it increasingly difficult to escape the shadow of his character. “More and more people think of you as that guy. That was the hardest thing for me was people thought I was that guy.” He recounted instances where fans would liken him to Ted based on his interests, remarking, “You’re just like Ted. Ted reads books,” which became quite disconcerting for him.

He described feeling a sense of identity confusion, noting how much of himself he infused into the character. “I lent a lot of myself to Ted, but when I wanted that back, people mistook me for the character rather than me creating a character,” Radnor said. This blurred line between actor and character led to some challenging interactions with fans, some of whom exhibited hostility towards him.

On the podcast, when asked whether he liked Ted, Radnor offered an interesting perspective, likening Ted to a younger brother—“slightly annoying” yet endearing. “I love him and I want the best for him and I also go, ‘Why would you do that? Why would you behave that way?’” he remarked, capturing the duality of his feelings toward the character he portrayed for nearly a decade.

Despite his mixed feelings, Radnor indicated that most of the feedback he receives nowadays comes from fans who appreciate his work. “I’m getting mostly like a lot of love around him,” he stated, indicating a shift in the public’s perception of Ted over time. He noted that while he does not encounter as much negative energy anymore, there were moments during the show’s airing when interactions could feel invasive, prompting him to question the nature of fandom: “Is this romantic or is this illegal? Is this like stalking?”

Throughout the series, Ted was portrayed as a hopeless romantic, often to a fault. His relentless pursuit of Robin Scherbatsky, played by Cobie Smulders, saw him engaging in questionable behaviour, such as obsessively chasing her and even dumping a partner on her birthday—twice. These actions sparked conversations about the evolving standards of romantic behaviour and consent in contemporary discourse.

Radnor acknowledged this shift in perceptions during a discussion with Craig Thomas, co-creator of “How I Met Your Mother,” on the podcast. The two reflected on the series’ past, noting that some themes and jokes, while fitting for their time, might not resonate well with today’s audience. “We do a bit of like apologising for things that were maybe ill-considered,” Radnor said. He described the inherent risk of comedy in an ever-evolving cultural landscape.

Despite the criticisms, Radnor expressed that he believes Ted’s character has aged well due to his underlying intentions. “I think that he was ultimately like a very well-intentioned, sweet, kind, loyal person,” he stated, suggesting that these traits were essential to his character’s charm. “His best qualities were not as a boyfriend, but as a friend. I think he would drop anything for his friends.”

In revisiting his time on “How I Met Your Mother,” Radnor appears to exhibit a deep understanding of both the character and the complexities of playing him for so long. While acknowledging the challenges, he has also come to appreciate the warmth and loyalty that Ted embodied, allowing him to reconcile his past experiences with a sense of fondness for both the character and the role he played in an iconic show, which remains close to the hearts of fans.
