The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office dispatched deputies to PortMiami in the early hours of Monday, August 24, after receiving reports about the fall. Their arrival followed initial alarm raised earlier that evening, around 3:30 a.m. local time, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the department.

Reports indicate that the fall occurred from the tenth floor of the ship, landing on the walkway of Deck 7. Several passengers shared their experiences via social media, with one individual, Wes Sold, recounting that the crew had announced the incident between 11 p.m. and midnight on August 23. He provided a harrowing account, stating that crew members had covered the passenger with a tarp after the fall.

In a statement released to Cruise Fever, a representative from Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the incident. The statement expressed sympathy for the situation, noting, “On the evening of August 23, a guest went over their balcony, falling on a lower deck. While our crew acted immediately to provide life-sustaining measures, the guest did not survive. Our thoughts are with the guest’s family during this very difficult time.”

The ongoing investigation by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is being conducted by detectives from their Homicide Bureau, although it has been classified as an “unclassified death investigation.” The Miami-Dade medical examiner’s office is expected to establish the official cause and manner of death as part of the inquiry.

The Norwegian Getaway, the vessel involved, was returning from a round-trip excursion that originated in Miami. The cruise had commenced on August 21 and included stops at popular destinations in the Bahamas, including Nassau, before concluding its journey back to Miami.
