Samuel Holcomb, a fifth grader who was on the bus at the time of the accident, recounted his harrowing experience. In an interview with Spectrum News 1 Louisville, he described how his immediate instinct was to contact both his parents and emergency services, but he encountered difficulties because of the poor mobile reception in the area. Initially, he thought the occurrence might have been a vivid nightmare.
Samuel detailed the moments leading up to the crash, recalling a truck veering into the bus’s lane, prompting the driver to swerve in an attempt to avoid a collision. Unfortunately, this manoeuvre resulted in the bus rolling off the road and into a ditch. “The tires rolled off into the ditch and the bus just fell down,” he explained. In the chaos that ensued, Samuel found himself with fellow passengers tumbling on top of him.
In the wake of the accident, Samuel took it upon himself to assist his classmates who were understandably distressed. He stated, “I comforted kids, comforted my friends because they were crying, and I started helping people.” His quick thinking in the face of adversity showcased resilience often seen in young individuals during crises.
Thanks to a family tracking application, Samuel’s parents were able to pinpoint his location and reached the accident scene ahead of emergency responders. His father expressed relief at hearing their child’s voice during the frantic moments following the crash. “We got lucky because we heard our child’s voice as we heard about the crash,” he commented. “So, like, one thing I know is my kid is alive.”
In response to the incident, Bullitt County Public Schools provided an update confirming that eight students were transported to a nearby medical facility for evaluation by EMS personnel, while five other students received transport by their parents. The school district is committed to addressing the emotional and psychological needs of its students following such a traumatic event.
Superintendent Dr. Jesse Bacon emphasised the priority of ensuring the well-being of students, staff, and families within the district. “Our highest priority continues to be the physical and emotional well-being of our students, staff, and families,” he said. The district has mobilised additional support staff and counsellors to provide necessary resources and assistance to those affected by the accident.
