In a devastating incident, veteran drummer Raja Azreen Raja Talib passed away after collapsing during a live performance at the Teruntum Rock Festival in Kuantan, Malaysia, on July 18. The musician, aged 56, was part of the popular band Meditasi, which had been active since the late 1980s, and was performing in front of an audience when he fell ill.
According to reports from local media, Raja Azreen collapsed while the band was playing the second track of a ten-song set. Frontman Bakaruddin Daud, known as Burn, recounted the harrowing moment, stating that he witnessed his bandmate slump over his drum kit. In a frantic attempt to assist, Burn rushed to Raja Azreen’s side while onlookers could only watch in horror.
After being carried backstage, an ambulance arrived promptly to transport Raja Azreen to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m. local time. Raja Azman’s brother later confirmed that the cause of death was related to heart complications, revealing that Raja Azreen had recently been diagnosed with diabetes.
“He was given respiratory assistance, but he did not regain consciousness or respond after the collapse,” Raja Azman explained. This tragic turn of events has left fans, friends, and family in shock, as Burn highlighted that there had been no signs of ill health during rehearsals leading up to the event. “He seemed really happy to meet up with friends and did not appear unwell at all,” he reflected.
Both Raja Azman and Burn indicated that Raja Azreen had experienced health issues prior to the festival. His brother revealed that the drummer had been hospitalised twice in June due to heart concerns, with one stay lasting two to three weeks. “It is possible that extreme fatigue took a toll,” Raja Azman suggested, noting that Raja Azreen had gone directly from a BMX competition to the music festival where he ultimately succumbed.
Raja Azreen was well-known beyond his music career, as he also ran a bicycle shop and participated actively in BMX competitions. His brother shared how passionate he was about cycling, a pursuit he had picked up again after showing signs of improved health.
Meditasi, whose name translates to ‘Meditation’ in Malay, enjoyed a successful run in the 1980s and 1990s, after which the band disbanded before reuniting in 2015. They maintain a solid following, with over 46,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, demonstrating their enduring influence in the Malaysian rock scene.
Burn expressed his profound grief over Raja Azreen’s untimely death, stating that the loss has affected him deeply due to their long-standing friendship. “We have known each other for decades, and it is hard to believe he is no longer with us,” he lamented while also shouldering the responsibility of arranging the drummer’s funeral.
Looking ahead, the future of Meditasi remains uncertain. Burn and guitarist Rosli Ahmad have yet to make any decisions regarding the band’s continuation. However, he conveyed a sentiment of resilience, confirming that the group intends to keep performing in honour of their late bandmate, who he believed would have wished them to carry on.
